Facing local rivals in consecutive games, Bishop’s has no bigger stretch for bragging rights in La Jolla this season. The Knights completed the first half of that equation Wednesday night with a 70-44 win over La Jolla Country Day.
“We’re looking out for La Jolla domination,” said Bishop’s guard Malik Love. “It’s a big rival game.”
Bishop’s used their transition offense to take control of the game in the first quarter. The Knights led 12-3 midway through the first quarter and were up 11 headed into the second.
“Coach (Tom Tarantino) had us practicing running the court, getting out and running our lanes so we can get our fast breaks and that’s what we planned to do,” Love said.
After an even second quarter, Bishop’s came out running in the third quarter, outscoring La Jolla Country Day 25-16 and effectively putting the game out of reach. With the win, the Knights (13-4, 2-0 Coastal South) have now won four in a row.
“This is a big league game and it puts us farther undefeated in league,” Love said.
Love led a balanced Bishop’s attack with a game-high 21 points. Offensively, he did a little bit of everything – driving to the hoop, hitting outside shots and posting up in the paint.
“I like to shoot threes and I like to post up. We have a couple plays where I’m coming off the screen for the threes and then we have a couple plays where I’m posting up,” Love said. “I have a bigger body than most people down low, so I just use it to my advantage.”
In a losing effort, forward Frankie Bamford led La Jolla Country Day with 17 points. The Torreys (9-6, 0-2 Coastal South) have lost three straight.
Bishop’s plays at La Jolla (12-6) on Friday, eyeing a second straight win over a local hoops power. Love considers the game against the Vikings one of the biggest on the Knights’ schedule.
“We’re going to come out and play hard and try to beat them like usual,” Love said.
