Despite a strong start to the season, Granite Hills is flying under the radar. But if the Eagles keep winning, like they did Friday night at Mira Mesa, they won’t be able to hide much longer.
“We haven’t made a lot of noise in the past couple of years,” said Granite Hills head coach Randy Anderson. “That’s been our thing this year is to really play with a chip on our shoulder and make a statement.”
Granite Hills indeed made a statement with a 69-54 win over the Marauders. The Eagles (10-4) have now won eight of their last nine games.
“Tonight was a big game for us against a city team,” Anderson said. “We talked about this being a game that we had to pick up a win on.”
From the opening tip, Mira Mesa had trouble keeping up with Granite Hills’ uptempo attack. Three minutes into the game, the Eagles had a 10-2 lead.
“We want to attack and attack constantly,” Anderson said. “Our goal is to get as many trips up and down the court and attack the basket.”
Early in the second quarter, a pair of threes from Granite Hills forward Kyle Snyder broke open the game, part of a 13-0 run to start the second quarter that gave the Eagles a 21-point lead. Granite Hills cooled off in the second half, but still won comfortably over Mira Mesa (9-5).
“We love playing that way,” Anderson said. “We have four really good offensive players that buy into it and just love it.”
Point guard Andre Lewis led Granite Hills with a game-high 28 points. Lewis scored both inside and outside to pace the Eagles, and is averaging 28.9 points per game this season.
“We got a great point guard who is very underrated in the county,” Anderson said. “He’s put in a lot of time in the offseason and I’m really proud of him. He’s an outstanding leader.”
Snyder (19 points) and guard Garrett Larch-Miller (15) also finished in double figures for Granite Hills. The Eagles tried to find a quick shot on every possession.
“We’ve got quite an offensive team that can really attack,” Anderson said.
For Mira Mesa, the defeat spoiled their first home game of the season. The Marauders were led by guard Jeffrey Bradley, who finished with a team-high 15 points.
