This season, Poway’s preseason resume has lacked a marquee win. The Titans changed that on Wednesday with an 85-82 overtime win over No. 6 Escondido.
“It gives us some credibility,” said Poway head coach Aaron Little. “I’m sure not a lot of people think too much of us right now, but you start beating teams like Escondido, and people will recognize us.”
Poway center Sam Beeler put the Titans ahead for good on a put back with 23 seconds left in the extra period. Two defensive stops and two free throws later, Poway escaped with a three-point win.
“It’s huge. Absoultely huge,” Little said.
Both teams traded baskets back and forth in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. With 26 seconds left, Escondido guard Joe Hudson nailed one of two free throws to put Escondido ahead three. On the ensuing trip down the floor, Poway guard Tadd Cocoris nailed a three from the top of the key to tie it up, and Hudson missed a layup in traffic as time expired.
“If we took care of a few situations, we could have pulled it out,” said Escondido head coach Paul Baldwin.
In overtime, Hudson hit deep threes on back-to-back possessions to give Escondido (10-5) an 80-74 lead with 3 minutes left. Rather than go away, Poway dug in, turning the tide with a three-point play from guard Derek Green to make it a one-point game with 1:15 to play.
Poway controlled the first three quarters of the contest by holding Hudson in check. Headed into the fourth quarter, Escondido’s star guard had only 10 points and the Titans had a six-point lead.
“Everything runs through Joe Hudson and when he’s not feeling it other guys have to step up. He’s not going to be hot every night,” Baldwin said.
But Hudson spearheaded the Cougars’ comeback, scoring 13 in fourth, including a pair of deep three pointers. Hudson finished with a game-high 33 points, 23 of which came in the fourth quarter and overtime.
“We tried to put as much pressure on as possible, but when the kid can shoot from 30 feet it’s hard to always put pressure on,” Little said. “Without him, they wouldn’t have went to overtime. It’s hard to game plan against him.”
Hudson was one of four Escondido players in double figures, along with Nathan Thompson (14 points), Tyler Moore (14) and Jesse Sahagun (12). The Cougars have lost three of their last four.
Beeler led Poway (9-5) with 20 points. The Titans 6’10” sophomore center created matchup problems in the low post.
“He was huge for us. When we have a size advantage like that, we have to take advantage,” Little said. “We got him the ball and he finished.”
Forward Matt Moreno chipped in with 12 points for Poway, and Cocoris added 10. The Titans host No. 1 La Costa Canyon (13-1) on Friday.
“We’re playing better,” Little said. “We just got to keep playing better.”
