No. 7 Eastlake tightens grip with win at Hilltop

With two weeks left in the regular season, No. 7 Eastlake is creeping closer to the Mesa League crown. The Titans won 59-40 at Hilltop Friday night to take a two-game lead over the rest of the league.

“Now we got control,” said Eastlake forward Dillon Doria. “This was a big game because we didn’t want to be the co-champs with Hilltop. It means a lot to come in here and win decisively.”

In a physical first quarter, Hilltop fed off their home fans’ energy to grab the early momentum. Both offenses started slow, and Hilltop guard Jacob Craig hit a three at the end of the first quarter to give the Lancers a 10-7 lead.

“It is definitely a tough place to play,” Doria said. “Their crowd is right on the floor.”

After weathering the storm, Eastlake used its defense to take control of the game. The Titans only allowed 16 points in the second and third quarters, leading by 18 heading into the fourth quarter and never leading by less than 15 points in the final eight minutes

“We knew they were going to come out strong with the crowd and everything, but we decided to stay poised,” Doria said. “We mixed up our defenses a lot and we just played aggressive.”

On offense, Eastlake found holes in Hilltop’s man-to-man defense all night long, resulting in numerous back door layups. Doria was the primary beneficiary of the Titans’ ball movement, scoring most of his game-high 20 points around the rim.

“They were overplaying me on the three, so I just back cut, gave it to (forward Robert Graves) and he always looks for me on the backdoor cut,” Doria said. “We just do what we did.”

With the win, Eastlake (19-4, 6-0) is now two games clear of the rest of the Mesa League. And they have now beaten second-place Hilltop (15-7, 4-2) twice by double digits.

“We showed that we’re the dominant team in the South Bay,” Doria said.

With six wins in a row, Eastlake is gaining steam with the regular season winding down. The Titans appear primed to make a run in the Division I playoffs.

“We’re a really deep team. We’re about eight or nine deep and we run the ball a lot and we play hard.” Doria said. “We’re going to give every team in the playoffs a hard time. We plan to go all the way.”

Forward Carlos Perez led Hilltop with 19 points. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Lancers.
