Escondido’s Hudson, Foothills Christian’s Brooks take home MVP honors
Facing off against a South All-Star team that had the section’s all-time leading scorer and a pair of state champions, the North All-Stars weren’t awestruck on Friday night at San Diego High. The North took a big lead early and rolled to a 103-87 win in the 2010 San Diego Senior All-Star Game – the most decisive win in the five-year history of the game.
“It was an up and down game and we had a lot of shooters on our team that could knock down shots, but they were way more athletic,” said Escondido guard Joe Hudson. “That’s what it came down to – knocking down shots and taking it to the rim.”
Hudson captured Most Valuable Player honors for the North All-Stars, scoring a game-high 17 points, one of five North All-Stars in double figures. The Wyoming-bound scorer made three of the North’s 11 three-pointers and had some nice finishes at the rim.
“I had no idea that I was going to get it. I thought Maliik Love was going to get it,” Hudson said of being named MVP. “Everyone just kept playing to my shot, so I just pump faked and got it to the rim or dished it off to someone.”
The North All-Stars are now 2-3 all time in the Senior All-Star Game, with both of their wins coming in the last three years. They led by as much as 24 in the second half.
“We won this one and it feels good,” Hudson said. “We were just having fun out there.”
Foothills Christian forward J’vonte Brooks captured MVP for the South All-Stars, scoring 12 points. Brooks concluded an evening full of hardware for the Knights, after Kalob Hatcher won the three-point shooting contest and Troy Leaf was crowned slam dunk contest champ earlier in the evening.
“That pretty much sums up our whole career,” Leaf said. “Us three have grown up together and played together, so it was cool for all three of us to win something and just end the San Diego career the right way.”
Hatcher captured the three-point title by outlasting Maranatha Christian guard Nick Westbrook in the finals. After both players made 15 in the finals, Hatcher outshot Westbrook 11-7 in a 30-second shootout.

In the slam dunk contest before the game, Leaf beat Army-Navy forward Kregg Jones by making both of his two attempts in the finals. On his first attempt, Leaf took a pass from Hoover guard Terrence Ingram and slammed it home and he followed that up by slapping the backboard with his right hand as he threw the ball down with his right.
“People didn’t really know that I can actually dunk and they have always underestimated my athleticism,” Leaf said. “It feels cool to come out here and show some people that I have some athleticism.”
The section’s all-time leading scorer finished second in a first round that featured as many missed as made dunks. On his first attempt of the night, Leaf tossed the ball in the air and removed his jersey while the ball was in midair before catching the ball and throwing down.
“I figured if I just made my first two, I would put pressure on other people to make dunks,” Leaf said. “I made some dunks and had a clear path to go the next round.”
