Mira Mesa's Williams, El Camino's Evans take home MVP honors
The South All-Stars held off a second-half comeback to beat the North All-Stars 78-75 at the 2009 Senior All-Star game Friday night at Mira Mesa High. Mira Mesa forward Damon Williams (South) and El Camino center Luke Evans (North) took home Most Valuable Player honors.
Playing in his home gym, Williams finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. The Marauders’ 6’7” forward hit three three-pointers.
“It means a lot to me. All the best seniors from San Diego were in this game,” Williams said. “I’m glad I was able to play really good and get everything I needed to to get the win. It’s a really good experience to win an MVP back at my place.”
Evans finished with a game-high in both points and rebounds. The Wildcats’ center finished with a double-double of 21 and 11.
“It means a lot,” Evans said. “Just from where I came last year to this year – it means a lot.”
Both teams felt each other out in the first half, and the South led 40-31 at the break. The North pulled even in the second half and the final minutes were back and forth, and very competitive.
“We spent the first half just trying to get in a groove and play with the guys,” Evans said. “In the second half, we came out and tried to win the game.”
“Everybody has a special thing they bring to the game,” Williams said. “There’s a lot of great players around here and to play with them is a great feeling.”
The South owns a 3-1 advantage all-time in the series.

Canyon Crest’s Tyler Cassett put up the most impressive performance of the night in the three-point contest at halftime of the game. Cassett made 16 three-pointers in the first round and made 24 in the final round, edging out the 22 put up by Poway’s Brian Kuklok.
“I’m never been timed like that,” Cassett said. “It’s kind of overwhelming and nerve racking at the end because he put up a good fight. But that is the most I’ve put up.”
Cassett made his first eight attempts in the final round en route to the crown.
“They were rebounding fast and giving me a good toss,” Cassett said. “I’m a rhythm shooter, so when they get it to me in the right spot and in the right rhythm, I guess I don’t miss.”
