Cardinals take down Pirates for second consecutive title
Hoover made their third Division II title in four years look easy. The top-seeded Cardinals overwhelmed Oceanside in a 64-42 win Friday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
“It was a nice team win against a good team,” said Hoover coach Ollie Goulston. “It was a lot of fun.”
Cardinals’ players took the court with former teammate Todd Doxey on their minds. Doxey, who graduated in 2008 and played basketball at Hoover, would have had his birthday on March 4.
“It’s important to all of us. I think about him every day,” Gouslton said. “We’re all really impacted by Todd. He was a special person.”
Hoover celebrated the late Doxey’s birthday with a team effort in a game that the Cardinals controlled the whole time.
“It was a great team effort,” Goulston said. “That’s what excites me about this team – different guys step up on different nights. That makes this a team in the true sense of the word.”
The Cardinals took control of the game early, ahead seven after the first quarter. After an even second quarter Hoover led 30-23.
“It was the little things that we didn’t do at the end of the half,” Goulston said. “We didn’t finish a layup, box out on the rebound, we made a dumb foul 90 feet from the basket.”
Hoover came out strong in the second half, pushing their lead to double digits quickly while shutting down Oceanside. The Cardinals led by 14 at the end of the third and won going away.
“If we could stop penetration and keep them off the boards, they’d have a problem scoring against us,” Goulston said. “We at times were good at stopping penetration and Angelo is just so good back there that even when we took some chances it kind of took the heart out of them.”
Forward Dame Ndiaye scored a game-high 19 points to lead Hoover (28-7) and forward Idris ibn Idris dropped in 16. Cardinals’ star center Angelo Chol finished with eight points but made a big impact on the defensive end.
“He’s one of those rare big men that makes everyone around him better because he’s so good defensively,” Goulston said.
Forward Osmond Nicholas led Oceanside (25-4) with 15 points. The Pirates were making their first appearance in the section finals since 1998.
