Knights win third consecutive Division V title
Foothills Christian has set the recent standard for small-school basketball in the San Diego Section. The Knights knocked off Maranatha Christian 60-56 Friday at the Jenny Craig Pavilion to win their third Division V title in a row.
“It feels so good to win three in a row,” said Foothills Christian guard Troy Leaf. “With all the good teams in San Diego basketball it’s hard to do.”
Troy Leaf made all eight of his free throw attempts down the stretch as the Knights outlasted the Eagles in a tight game. After Foothills Christian forward Brandon Hale broke a 47-47 tie with a three-pointer with 4:31 left, Maranatha Christian could not come closer than one in the final minutes.
“I hope the people in state don’t realize it either. Don’t put him on the line with three minutes to go in a two-point game,” said Knights coach Brad Leaf. “I don’t care how bad he shot during the game.”
Troy Leaf led top-seed Foothills Christian (26-5) with 19 points and was one of three Knights in double figures. Center Chen Cai scored 19 to lead second-seed Maranatha Christian (25-4) and guard David Porter (16 points) also finished in double figures.
“It’s like choose your poison,” Brad Leaf said of the Eagles inside-outside duo.
After the game, Foothills Christian head coach Brad Leaf couldn’t decide which of the three consecutive titles meant the most.
“I don’t know,” Brad Leaf said. “I just come here with a bunch of guys that expect to win. These guys make me expect to win.” For the second-straight year, the Knights knocked off the Eagles in the title game. Last year Foothills Christian won by 11 at Cox Arena.
“We had them on the ropes a couple of times, we could just never deliver the knockout blow,” Troy Leaf said. “They stayed with us the whole time but we pulled it out in the end.”
