Cavers impress with 10-point win over Cardinals

Third-ranked San Diego answered any question as to whether they are one of the best teams in the section against Hoover on Friday night. Their answer was an emphatic “yes” – a 76-66 home win over the second-ranked Cardinals.

“No one had faith in us when we didn’t have our three (transfers). Some of our team in the beginning didn’t have faith in themselves,” said San Diego center Jeremy Tyler. “But we work hard and we give each other heart and we just play hard every game.”

Tyler finished with a game-high 37 points, including a number of ferocious dunks. San Diego’s star also got help from his teammates – Xavier Roy scored 13 points and Dalawn Moss had 11.

“We already knew they were going to pack it in on me or put a guy on me to foul,” Tyler said. “So that’s why I let other guys show that they got game too.”

The game got off to a frenetic start and neither team was able to get an advantage in the first quarter. The Cavers took control with an 8-0 run to start the second quarter and led 41-35 at the break.

After halftime, San Diego took control of the game. The Cavers had a 17-point lead in the quarter and led by 15 headed into the fourth.

“If we needed go fast, we went fast. If we needed to slow it down, we could do that,” Tyler said. “We had total control of the game.”

The Cavers lead never fell below double digits in the fourth as they cruised to the 10-point victory. Tyler punctuated the Cavers’ statement win with a statement of his own – a windmill dunk in the game’s closing moments.

“That was the first time I’ve ever done that in a game,” Tyler said. “I always thought about it, but I didn’t want to be embarrassed and miss so I’m just glad I got it down.”

Hoover had four players finish in double figures in the loss, led by Dame Ndiaye, Reggie Lawson and Idris ibn Idris, who each scored 13. Cardinals center Angelo Chol was held to four points, almost 10 points below his average.

With the win, the Cavers (10-6, 4-0) now sit alone atop the Eastern League and remains unbeaten in the section. Hoover (18-5, 3-1) dropped to second with their first league loss.

“I haven’t lost a league game since I’ve been here at San Diego High and I’m not going to lose one this year,” Tyler said.
