Top two teams fall to Centurions, Mavericks
The Martin Luther King Jr. Day Showcase at Hoover High School on Monday was a showcase – but not just for El Camino and Hoover, the section’s top two teams. The four games on Monday showed that the discussion for the best team in San Diego runs further than two deep.

In the second game, No. 6 University City got hot in the first half and never looked back in a wire-to-wire 69-62 win over No. 1 El Camino. The Centurions led by as much as 19 before holding off a late Wildcats rally.
“We shared the basketball,” said University City head coach Terry Stonebreaker. “We were doing that early in the year but we didn’t do that in the middle tournaments. We got back to that tonight – where we’re actually playing University City basketball.”
University City jumped out to an early 5-0 lead an increased their lead to double digits in the second quarter. The Centurions led by 15 at the half thanks five first half three-pointers.
El Camino came out strong in the second half and used a 16-4 run to make it a five-point game late in the third quarter. Wildcats point guard Griffin Hunter sparked the run, scoring 10 of his 12 points during the four-minute span.
The two teams went back and forth in the fourth quarter and El Camino cut the lead to three on a Ryan Ena layup with 1:25 left. But after University City guard Mark Hills hit two free throws, Ena missed a three and the Centurions regained possession to hold off the comeback.
Stonebreaker said the Centurions’ bench play helped preserve the win.
“Our bench played better. We went about eight deep,” Stonebreaker said. “Our bench came off and they were stable – they didn’t have to do too much.”
University City center David Washington had a game-high 24 points and. Reynard Rice (15 points), Mark Hills (12) and Peter Beale-Wirsing (12) also scored in double figures for the Centurions (14-3).
“We’re a really good team,” Stonebreaker said. “We don’t get a lot of respect in the city, so it’s kind of nice to get a little bit of respect.”
Guard Alan Cox and center Luke Evans led El Camino (15-3) with 14 points apiece. The loss was the Wildcats first to a San Diego Section team this season.

Any struggles La Costa Canyon has had offensively this season didn’t show when they met No. 2 Hoover on Monday night. The Mavericks hit 10 three-pointers and held off the Cardinals in the fourth quarter to defeat the hosts 65-59.
“We’ve really struggled to score all season,” said La Costa Canyon head coach Dave Cassaw, “so to see as many go down tonight as they did – I was a little surprised.”
Both teams had trouble finding the basket in the first quarter, and La Costa Canyon only scored two points in the opening six minutes. La Costa Canyon forward Jake Ducey hit a three at the buzzer, but the Mavericks still trailed Hoover 12-7 after the opening quarter.
“That’s how our whole team is – up and down scoring wise,” Cassaw said. “I really felt like we were getting some good shots, but they weren’t going down.”
Ducey’s three was a sign of things to come, as the Mavericks caught fire in the second quarter. The Mavericks navigated Hoover’s press to find open looks from downtown and went a stretch of four consecutive possessions with a made three-pointer.
“I think the kids just settled in,” Cassaw said. “I think that was more the case than anything for them.”
La Costa Canyon also switched to a 2-3 zone in the second quarter, which shut down Hoover’s dribble drive attack. The Mavericks outscored the Cardinals 21-8 in the second quarter and had an eight-point lead at the half.
The third quarter was more of the same and La Costa Canyon held a 50-33 lead headed into the fourth. Hoover turned up the pressure in the fourth quarter and cut the lead to 10 with six minutes left, but the Mavericks (12-4) withstood the run to hold off the Cardinals (17-4).
Forward Jake Ducey led La Costa Canyon with 21 points – including five threes – and freshman guard Matt Shrigley scored 19. Idris ibn Idris had a game-high 23 points and center Angelo Chol scored 11 for Hoover.
No. 9 Foothills Christian, Maranatha Christian pick up big wins
In the opening game of the showcase, Maranatha Christian (14-3) downed Rancho Bernardo (12-5) 67-41. The Eagles led by eight at the half and took complete control of the game by outscoring the Broncos 27-3 in the third quarter. Chen Cai had a game high 25 and Santiago Simintal added 20 for the Eagles.
Ninth-ranked Foothills Christian wrapped up the showcase with a 48-47 win over No. 7 Torrey Pines. The Knights (15-4) had a 10-point halftime lead and hung on to beat the Falcons (13-3). Troy Leaf had 16 points to lead the Knights; Trevor Newquist led the Falcons with a game-high 17 points.
