The formula for Vista’s success is simple – pressure defense and transition offense. The No. 3 Panthers did that on Friday night en route to a 60-42 win at Mission Hills.
“It’s really important to us,” Vista forward Quincy Lawson said of the Panthers’ defense. “We get most of our points from steals.”
After a sluggish first half, Vista stormed out of the gates in the third quarter to take control of the game. The Panthers locked down defensively and outscored the Grizzlies 21-6 to take a 23-point lead into the fourth quarter – a lead that would be more than enough.
“We’re usually a second half team, so we start to pick it up in the second half,” Lawson said. “We realized we needed to, so we could finish the game – we wanted to finish it early in the second half.”
Mission Hills head coach Curtis Hofmeister said Vista’s pressure was too much for the Grizzlies.
“They make you pay for mistakes better than most everybody in the county,” Hofmeister said. “They can change from defense to offense as quick as anybody.”
Lawson led a balanced Vista attack with a game-high 17 points. Three other Panthers finished in double figures, including guard Eric Miller, who scored 16 points and made four three-pointers.
“He was amazing,” Lawson said. “I don’t think he missed at all – he was on fire.”
Vista (15-2) has won seven straight going into Avocado League play next week.
“We’re playing really well as a team,” Lawson said.
Forward Jeremy Ford led Mission Hills (5-12) with 12 points. The Grizzlies have now lost four games in row.
