Falcons win by one, will share Avocado crown with Mavericks
Friday night’s regular season finale between No. 5 Torrey Pines and No. 2 La Costa Canyon was for more than just bragging rights – it was also for a league title. The Falcons jumped out to a big third quarter lead and held off a late Mavericks rally for a thrilling 44-43 victory.
“To play these guys for a league championship and to win, it’s a great feeling,” said Torrey Pines guard Trevor Newquist. “It’s unbelievable.”
Newquist made the go ahead free throw with 21.2 seconds left and forced La Costa Canyon guard James McCann into difficult shots at the other end that McCann couldn’t convert, preserving the win for the Falcons.
“Anytime you win a league championship in the last game on the last second, it feels pretty euphoric,” said Torrey Pines head coach John Olive.
McCann missed a fall away jumper with six seconds left, but Torrey Pines could not secure possession, losing the ball out of bounds. The Mavericks had another chance with less than two seconds left, but a McCann runner drew iron as time expired.
“They didn’t have any timeouts left and I didn’t want to take a timeout to give them a chance to set something up,” said Torrey Pines head coach John Olive. “So we rolled the dice that for two seconds we could play good enough defense.”
“Trevor’s defense on McCann at the end was fabulous,” Olive said.
Torrey Pines and La Costa Canyon finished their league campaigns with identical 9-1 records, which means the rivals will share the Avocado League crown. It is the Falcons’ third league championship in a row.
“This senior group has won three straight titles,” Olive said. “That’s pretty impressive.”
The first half was very even and it looked like La Costa Canyon would take a lead into the break, ahead four with a minute left. But Newquist hit baskets on consecutive possessions, including a two to beat the buzzer, to give Torrey Pines a 23-22 lead at the half.
The Falcons dominated the third quarter, holding the Mavericks scoreless for the first five and a half minutes while jumping out to a 12-point lead. Torrey Pines led by eight at the end of the third.
“The whole season we’ve stuck to coming out strong in the third quarter, but we were kind of surprised we came out and got that 10-point lead,” Newquist said. “We got Kramer into foul trouble, we got Ducey into foul trouble and with that we created mismatches and were able to get easy buckets off of that.”
The game, however, was far from a done deal. Led by three Parker Johnson three-pointers, La Costa Canyon chipped away at the Torrey Pines lead and tied the game at 43 on a McCann bucket with 1:32 left.
“I was just thinking, ‘There’s no way. We came so far to let this slip away again,’” Newquist said.
After each team failed to score on the ensuing possessions, Torrey Pines got the ball with 34.8 seconds left. Newquist was fouled on that possession, and was put on the line with the chance to make the go ahead points.
“I wanted to make them both. The first one felt really good and to go in and out it kind of brought me down,” Newquist said. “But I knew if we were going to win I had to make one of them. I was able to do it, but I was a little bit upset.”
Newquist’s free throw would be enough to hold off La Costa Canyon. But just barely.
“Our foul shooting wasn’t great, but we made the one that counted,” Olive said.
Newquist led Torrey Pines (23-4) with a game-high 19 points. McCann was the only player in double figures for La Costa Canyon (21-5) with 12 points.
