Pirates earn season sweep of Knights in tight defensive battle
The showdown between the Valley League’s best on Friday night before a packed gym at Oceanside High came down to the final buzzer. San Marcos and Oceanside battled evenly and the Pirates won 43-40 to control their own destiny in the league with three games left.
“There’s not one person in the gym that’s not fired up – even the ref’s over there clapping,” said Oceanside guard Jerry Whitaker. “It’s league, baby. It’s the Valley League.”
The game was close throughout and neither team led by more than five points. In the final six minutes alone there were four ties and two lead changes.
Tied 38-38 with 1:19 left and the shot clock running down, Oceanside forward Samuel Mence drove to the hoop and hit a floater – his only basket of the game – to put the Pirates ahead two. The Pirates led by five with 13 seconds left when San Marcos center Matt Meyers made a putback to make it a three-point game.
“It was intense,” Whitaker said. “That’s what this league is all about.”
After a missed Oceanside free throw, San Marcos had one last chance to tie the game. But with three seconds left, Knights guard Hayden Bachman missed a fadeaway three and time ran out before San Marcos could get another shot off.
“This was the most important league game,” Whitaker said. “We don’t feel like we won yet because we still have three more games.”
Both teams came into the game knowing that a win would give them the inside track to a Valley League championship. The Pirates basketball team now looks to do what their football team did in the fall.
“We want to hang another banner,” said Whitaker, a wide receiver on Oceanside’s football team. “This is not just a football school.”
From the opening tip, defense dominated. It was the lowest scoring game each team has had this season.
“Everybody wanted to play defense. Nobody wanted to let anybody score,” Whitaker said. “Everybody had to dig, press really hard and play good defense.”
With the win, Oceanside swept the season series with San Marcos. The Pirates won 61-46 at San Marcos on Jan. 13.
“We knew they were going to come out hard. Every team comes out hard,” Whitaker said. “I would be surprised if a team came out soft. Every team comes to play.”
Whitaker led Oceanside (19-3, 7-2) with 15 points and forward Osmond Nicholas, who signed a letter of intent to play football at San Diego State earlier in the week, also finished in double figures with 13 points. Center Matt Meyers had a game high 21 points for San Marcos (15-7, 5-3).
Oceanside may not be considered a top-10 team since their loss to three-win Mt. Carmel two weeks ago, but that doesn’t matter to Whitaker. He and the Pirates are focused on capturing a league title.
“It’s a ladder,” he said. “Next step, next game.”
