Walk Against Obesity (La Voz de la Frontera, 1/20/13 by José de Jesús Jiménez Vega)

Mexicali, BC - With participation of more than 100 people, evidence of a breakthrough was penetrated in the consciousness about the problem of obesity in Baja California as the State Trade Union of Workers in Education (SETE) of Baja California (D-MX-1) held with success the 10th edition of a 2.5 kilometers hike yesterday.

Beginning at avenida Presidente Plutarco Elías Calles, the route included parts of bulevares Macristy and De las Américas, as well as calle Río Elota. This exciting competition had as its goal the SETE facilities located on avenida República de Panamá and calle Río Elota.

The main objective of the event was participation to improve physical and mental health to basically fight the problem of obesity. The Secretary General of the Teachers Union, Alejandro Valdez Zamora, D-MX-1 delegation stressed that according to the latest statistics on health carried out by authorities, Baja California occupies one of the first places in obesity.

In that regard, he said, teachers and in this case retirees and pensioners, have taken the responsibility by setting an example in activities, precisely to prolong personal their well-being, but with a very clear message to the community to follow in their steps to reverse the less than honorable place that Baja California occupies in the field of obesity.

"Jubilados Jubilosos" ("Jubilant Retirees"), as this competition is called also had the objective to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Magisterial Delegation. Valdez publicly thanked the support always received from the Municipal Institute of Sports and Physical Culture for the realization of this event, whose Sports Commission is headed by Professor Mario Juventino Cárdenas.

The organization’s Technical Advisor of Goals, INDECUF and Hermanos Baca Ixta staff group, as well as the Alternate for Social Welfare, Professor J. Conception Solis who made important contributions; Commissioner of Judges, Professor Sergio Ponce and the Coordinator of the Event, Professor Federico Ramírez Colunga. It also counted on the collaboration of the Institute of Promotion of Sport, headed by Mauro Pacheco, of the INDECUF. Federico Ramírez and Francisco Javier Baca have been obstinate promoters of this kind of walk. Yesterday they had the participation of the champion from last year, Mirna Escandón and the men's champion, Daniel Gutiérrez.

"Corra, camine y viva" ("Run, walk and live"), advised Mario Juventino Cárdenas, who was there for the entire event, starting at 9:00 hours, with the participation of 40 people more than last year in the following categories: age 55-59; 65-69; 60-64; 70 and up; so it included the involvement of teachers, retirees and pensioners.
