Baja & Border News Translations: Oaxaca Guelaguetza Festival in Tijuana

Oaxaca Guelaguetza Festival in Tijuana (Tijuana Press, 1/19/13 by Daniel Angel)

Tijuana, BC - If there is agreement regarding the necessary money, a popular party in the State of Oaxaca, known as the Guelaguetza could come to Tijuana, said the President Councilor of the Human Rights Commission on Vulnerable Groups, Rodolfo Olympus Bojorquez.

The intention, he said, is in August when the city would present a festival dedicated to the Virgin of Carmen held by Oaxacans each year on the 2nd Monday after July 16. "If we want to bring the Guelaguetza, it will depend also if the State of Oaxaca can support us. We would like to provide a sample of our culture and cuisine from the main indigenous groups there to the city of Tijuana", commented the Councillor.

He said already interested in the project is the Municipal Institute of Art and Culture (Imac), the Committee of Tourism and Conventions (Cotuco), as well as the Center Cultural Tijuana (Cecut), and they are contemplating the Cortijo San Jose as a stage.

The goal, said the Alderman, is that communities of indigenous people who inhabit the city can organize their own events with the participation of the authorities of the three orders of Government as facilitators. "Because they have such experience and have discouraged indigenous communities from organizing but the continuity of this type of event is usually because the Government entities tend to take possession of such events," he noted. He finally said that they do not even know how much money is needed to bring the holiday to this city with the intention that is becomes an annual event. http://www.tijuanapress.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=8726:quieren-traer-a-tijuana-la-guelaguetza&catid=1:locales&Itemid=50
