Baja & Border News Translations: Concerns of Alcoholism Mainly Among Youth in BC; Early Detection Allows Survival for 83% of Children with Cancer

Concerns of Alcoholism Mainly Among Youth in BC (Uniradio Informa, 1/12/13)

TIJUANA, BC - Despite Baja California not being one of the States where levels of alcoholism are so high in the country, the tendency of young people to use intoxicating drinks is at 3% for in age ranges between 12 and 24.

Facing this, information modules will be installed at each Baja California public health center on January 12-24 in order to educate society about the problems with alcoholism, reported Dr. Leticia Blake Rivera, head of the Health Services jurisdiction of Tijuana.

"Young people are noted to drink less than once a month, occasionally, but in larger quantities. That makes young people a focus, where parents and friends should be alerted. This is why they should take advantage of coming to the health centers this week. 39% of accidents ending in fatalities are caused by alcohol and alcohol is present in 49% of suicides," she said.

The Coordinator of Professionals from Alcoholics Anonymous, Albino stressed the importance of making self-assessments to determine if drinking is a problem for each individual. "We have information modules where we will give our program information about what we do and do not do to all the people who come to us; give them pamphlets that are auto diagnostic asking if they have lost their jobs or family. They are aimed at self-diagnosis and if you are sincere you have problems, well, you can not lie to yourself,” he explained. http://www.uniradioinforma.com/noticias/bajacalifornia/articulo168412.html

Early Detection Allows Survival for 83% of Children with Cancer (Uniradio Informa, 1/12/13)

Tijuana, BC – The early detection of childhood cancer has allowed for an increase in the survival rates for children who struggle with this disease by up to 83% for cases at the Oncology Pediatric Service in Hospital General de Tijuana (HGT). Even treatments applied to infants have shown effectiveness by allowing a total of 96 children to defeat their fights against cancer, while another 65 are in active treatment.

The director of the hospital, Jose Manuel Robles Barbosa, indicated that another determinant factor to improvement in the situations of children are the attitudes of personnel that work in that area and their commitments to the young patients. He noted detecting cancers on-time is the first phase in the fight against childhood cancer through interventions made decisively by the general practitioner, parents and teachers; those who must meet these responsibilities.

He explained that general practitioners at the health centers and medical students from public and private universities are in constant training and are prepared to be suspicious of any signs which lead them to assume presence of the disease. Fevers, head or joint aches, skin spots, bruises without apparent reason, sores, paleness, nodules or "lumps" on the body are only a few warning signs that warrant medical supervision at health centers, he said.

He stressed that infants who received consultation for these kinds of symptoms are eventually sent to the Pediatric Oncology Service for evaluation by specialized physicians. The doctor explained leukemia, lymphoma and brain tumors are the main types of cancer detected in children, from newborn until adolescence.

He clarified that cancer treatment is not only based on medical aspects; allowed are psychological, teaching and recreational activities to provide integral services for the child and family to fight against cancer. Referring to Seguro Popular insurance, he stated that it covers medical expenses required by minors during their treatment and through it, 235 children have benefited from treatments at the hospital from 2005 to date. http://www.uniradioinforma.com/noticias/tijuana/articulo168453.html
