Baja & Border News Translations: 3% Water Rate Increase Approved; New Year Celebration Cost Varied

3% Water Rate Increase Approved (El Sol de Tijuana, 1/2/13)

Tijuana, BC - The Congress of the State approved budget expenditures for Baja California in 2013 as 37.1 million pesos ($2.86 million US) although it reduced an increase in vehicular traffic cards and approved an increase of 3% to the water rate.

In the proposed budget for expenditures presented to the Executive, it planned to increase the water rate to 9.6% and increase vehicular traffic card costs by 100 pesos ($7.72 US). Despite a decrease in these collections, the budget passed on the last day of 2012 including an increase of 100 million pesos ($7.72 million US) over that originally requested by the Executive authority via the State Governor.

In a press release issued by Congresswoman Nancy Sanchez, it was reported that the parliamentary faction of the PRI "pushed the adoption of the budget without increases that impact the economy to the population". According to Congresswoman Nancy Sanchez, the State budget had a deficit of more than 800 million pesos ($61.7 million US), for which the State Congress approved the use of a credit that would solve this budget liability to not impact the pockets of the citizens.

Similarly, in correspondence with requests to the State Congress for various social and productive sectors, the twentieth legislature favored the momentum of various social, productive projects and public works that citizens demanded with urgency, which were included to be launched in fiscal year 2013. http://www.oem.com.mx/elsoldetijuana/notas/n2827013.htm

New Year Celebration Cost Varied (El Sol de Tijuana, 1/2/13 by Rocio Galvan)

Tijuana, BC - The New Year gave residents of the city multiple choices for dining and dancing, but in all cases the cost was between 300 and 1,500 pesos ($23 and 116 US).

Prices for a dinner in one of the best restaurants in the city ranged between 400 and 800 or up to 1,500 pesos ($31, 62, 116) depending whether it included a drink and menudo for the early morning of January 1, 2013.

According to Julián Plascencia, leader of the National Chamber for the Restaurant Industry in Tijuana (Canirac), this allowed options to secure a comfortable coexistence on the last day of the year. Prices for this occasion have an important variation because the dinners are sometimes made with more expensive products and include drinks, but the important thing is the quality and variety. He noted that still there is no imbalance of service in the restaurant industry in Tijuana, but ultimately this year it was much better than in the past.

On the other hand, the tenants of the markets in the city such as in Hidalgo reported its sales were up significantly by people who preferred to prepare dinner at home, since it is more economical. Salvador Martinez, after ten years at this market, said families who come to buy usually prefer family life or preparing dishes done in the traditional way.

For her part, Ana Rodríguez indicated that to her father, tamales and fritters are sacred and punch for the eve; it makes him happy, so we have to give it to him. http://www.oem.com.mx/elsoldetijuana/notas/n2827057.htm
