Profeco intensifies surveillance operations (La Cronica, 2/13/13 by Carmina Ortiz)

MEXICALI, BC - Since Monday, the Federal Consumer Attorney (Profeco) began verification of establishments, such as flower shops and businesses engaged in the sale of gifts for the day of love and friendship, said Alvaro Quintana Arreguin, Office Manager of the unit in Mexicali.

Verification consists of prices being in view of the public for items which are in demand, among other things, in order to avoid abuse by traders and defend the economy of consumers during the celebrations of February 14.

To prevent such abuses, the federal unit launched the campaign "Exige precios a la vista (requires prices in sight)" which consists of placing signage in the main sale areas to invite consumers to verify the cost and quality of the products they purchase before the end of their purchase.

Many commercial centers are open from Monday and until February 14 including florists, candy stores, gift shops, clothing, CDs, perfumeries, as well as hotels, restaurants, bars and public parking lots.

Quintana Arreguin said that abuses, particularly in Mexicali, have declined approximately 20%, with increasingly less complaints presented by citizens about abuses or poor quality products.

"If a citizen wants to file a complaint, it is important to have your proof of purchase in case of an investigation. However, should the establishment fail to deliver, merchants ask that we provide verification."

Since Monday when verifications began, no anomalies or irregularities were found in any visited establishments, the official said. The only recommendation was, he said, to keep prices in sight and respect them at the time of purchases. http://www.lacronica.com/EdicionEnlinea/Notas/Noticias/13022013/669953.aspx
