Extension Requested for Implementation of New Consumer Protection Laws; Municipal Police Identify Murder Suspect

MEXICALI, BC - Before the forthcoming implementation of the new official standard 185 on October 26th, which is intended to ensure to consumers purchasing liters of gasoline obtain an actual liter, gasoline station operators from around the country are calling for an extension in its application by at least 180 days. The law corrects a long-term practice where stations sell 900ml of fuel or less while still charging customers for a full liter (1000ml).

The President of the National Chamber of Commerce for Services and Tourism, Jorge Cervantes Arenas, confirmed the extension request yesterday and clarified a response from the federal authorities has not been obtained so far. This request, he said, was presented several weeks ago through associations in the country, as well as by his own National Confederation of Chambers of Commerce, however, so far there is no official response.

The leader of the organization sued, saying that the request for such an extension is because the supplier of the new software systems must install the changes on each fuel pump and they do not have sufficient capacity to meet the demand represented by 50,000 service stations operating in the country. He said once an owner contracts for the installation of the services, the provider can complete the work within 180 days, so it will be practically impossible for all the country's service stations to have the work done before the October 26 deadline.

He finally recognized the Federal Deputy, Fernando Castro Trenti, has offered to support them in seeking this extension, but so far the request has not been posted to the Official Journal of the Federation. As you will recall, the Ministry of Economy published a response to comments regarding the official Mexican standard 185 (185 NOM) in the Official Journal of the Federation, which introduces the new software requirement for fuel service stations along with official Mexican standard 005 (NOM 005). It stated the standards would enter into force on October 26th to directly protect the more than 32 million consumers of gasoline and diesel. The announcement of pending implementation has existed since at least July. http://www.el-mexicano.com.mx/informacion/noticias/1/3/estatal/2012/10/16/621624/exigen-prorroga-para-aplicacion-de-nom-185.aspx
