Baja & Border News Translations: Kellogg Cereal is a Health Risk; "Linea Joven" Program Assists Teens

Kellogg Cereal is a Health Risk (La Voz del la Frontera, 10/14/12 by Alejandro Garcia Magallon)

Mexicali, BC - This weekend, La Commission Federal for Protection Against Health Risks (Cofepris), an agency under the Ministry of Health, ordered the Kellogg company in Mexico to completely stop marketing and withdraw "Frosted Mini-Wheats" wheat cereals from their market, since according to reports of U.S. health authorities they are contaminated with metal fragments.

Central authorities of Cofepris indicated that this contamination was caused by a failure in the chain of production in the United States. This was detected after reviewing information with the American company working with Cofepris and a daily review of health alerts from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the neighboring country to the North.

Cofepris detected 5,200 boxes of this cereal were distributed at the point of sale in Baja California, so it asked the cereal company branch in Mexico to proceed with its collection and destruction to prevent risks to consumers. Proactively it has also requested the company not distribute and destroy 11,280 boxes in warehouses in the State of Querétaro.

The health unit noted that the sale of this product, whose withdrawal in the United States was classified by the FDA as Type II, that is, voluntary and low-risk without reported adverse to the health of consumers in that country was not reported in the rest of the entities of the Republic. Cofepris recommends that people not eat this cereal and where appropriate return it to the store and demand a corresponding refund. http://www.oem.com.mx/lavozdelafrontera/notas/n2731933.htm
