Tijuana, BC - Concluding this year, statistical indicators of tourism activity in Baja California recorded an improvement since the United States Government issued a travel alert on February 8 very similar to the one on November 20 of 2011.
The Secretary of Tourism of the State, Juan Tintos Funcke, stated that reviewing the statistical indicators, after the February 8 alert was issued, they reflect an improvement, the case of hotel occupancy.
Regarding hotel occupancy, based on monitoring carried out in the period from January to November this year, compared to 2009, in the city of Tijuana, the average rose from 40% to 54%, in Mexicali from 54% to 60%, Ensenada from 33% to 48%, Tecate from 25% to 35%, Playas de Rosarito from 18% to 27% and San Felipe 19% to 28%.
The State official said that while regional and national markets have contributed to this revival, there are indicators that reflect an increase in the influx of tourists coming from the United States, for example, the best hotel occupancy in the last five years for holiday weekends in the United States, such as "Memorial Day", the "4th of July", "Labor Day" as well as the Easter season and summer holidays.
Another example is the arrival of tourist cruises to the port of Ensenada, which this year was distinguished by being the only one in the Mexican Pacific which recorded an increase compared with the previous year, with 141 arrivals so far this year against 130 that were recorded in the same period of 2011 and a 12% increase in the number of passengers with the vast majority Americans and Mexican Americans who come from the Los Angeles, California area, figures that position Ensenada in second place nationally, only below the port of Cozumel.
Also stressed is the improved number of participants from the United States at tourist events like races, cycling trips and off road racing, as well as a 9% increase in the sale of fishing permits and also increased season of hunting tourism so far with hunters mainly coming from the United States.
On the other hand, in regard to the film industry, examples such as the production of "Little Boy" and more recently the movie "All is Lost" with famed actor Robert Redford, who with the production team remained in Baja California during the filming and motivated them to disseminate testimonials about their good experience in our institution.

Tijuana, BC - With the purpose of strengthening the program "Vida Digna" (Dignified Life) whose purpose is to improve the living conditions of vulnerable groups in Baja California, the Secretaría de Desarrollo Social (Sedesoe) uses their actions in communities to detect families needing social supports.
Under Secretary of Sedesoe in Zona Costa, Mario Osuna Jiménez, reported that in response to the instructions of Governor Jose Guadalupe Osuna Millan, dependence redoubled in the last weeks of this year with the actions of social promotion in communities in order to meet the needs of the people.
"Governor Jose Osuna Millan and Secretary Pablo Alejo López Núñez instructed us to have closer rapport within the communities," explained the officer to clarify social promoters performing intense tours in communities with this objective.
Mario Osuna explained that the program "Vida Digna" is completely humanitarian, by providing advice, training and comprehensive assistance to people affected both directly and indirectly by economic and psychological factors.
"Apart from providing economic, physical, food and moral support, we generate a collective and healthy environment in families," he added. He added the central commitment of the program is worthy of State development and support for all those who are needy and motivated by the program; "essentially they managed to transcend both their emotions and economics, leaving each one motivated with a capacity and certainty of productivity".
The State Government program is aimed primarily at people that are in conditions of really extreme poverty and want to work hand in hand with the project, he noted. He also pointed out that in 2011 they benefited 1,150 families in Tijuana, and in 2012, 1,668 will benefit. The program includes training, workshops and counseling, in addition to three grants: one for housing, one dignifying education and another to undertake a productive project.
