BC Relies on Agencies who Work with Migrants (Uniradio Informa, 12/31/12)

Tijuana, BC - The Secretary of State Social Development allocated 17,291,925 pesos ($1.3 million US) during 2012 in resources to 14 civilian social agencies working with migrants in this entity. The head of the Agency, Pablo Alejo López Núñez, pointed out that they have channeled a series of strategies to protect migrants arriving daily at the border from the United States in search of a better quality of life.

Through various programs that were implemented and executed by the unit, he said that it seeks to provide housing and care to the migrant population. At all times, he added, what is intended is promotion of access to social justice, human dignity, the common good, solidarity and subsidiary towards deported migrants.

Also, he mentioned we also have been concerned because the migrant population which arrives daily to Baja California in search of better life opportunities is adequately addressed. For that reason, he noted, resources were targeted through organizations of civil society so that the most basic needs of migrants are remedied.

He noted that resources are destined for attention to migrants no matter if they are nationals or foreigners, who come to stay in precarious conditions, putting their life at risk in search of the American dream. He stressed that there are a total of 14 bodies of civil society that are dedicated to helping the migrant population in Baja California, seven are in Mexicali, one is in Tecate, five are in Tijuana and one more is in Ensenada. All of them, he added, have a mission to ensure improved living conditions of migrants who are deported at the Baja California border through United States ports. http://www.uniradioinforma.com/noticias/bajacalifornia/articulo166427.html

Zero Tolerance for Drunk Drivers during New Year Celebrations (Uniradio Informa, 12/31/12, SSPM press

Tijuana, BC - A total of 16 BAC testing stations will be installed on the night of December 31 until the morning of January 1 so that the festivities of new year do not result in any incidents, said the head of the Secretariat of Municipal Public Safety (SSPM), Alberto Capella.

He urged the population to celebrate responsibly, since at this time there will be no tolerance for those who exceed the allowed blood alcohol limit or they will be referred to the Undersecretary of the appropriate authorities. He said, in this regard the recommendation is to refrain from driving drunk and use other options such as a designated driver, a free taxi or do not leave the celebration site.

For his part, the Director-General of Police and Transit, Francisco Javier Viruete Munguía, explained there will be 8 check points, which in practice will become 16 working in both directions. He mentioned that there will also be roaming units throughout the city to detect drivers who try to evade the checkpoints.

He stressed that this action is part of operation "White Christmas" whose primary purpose is to assure that Tijuana citizens enjoy full security without regrettable mishaps. Viruete Munguía, commented the checkpoints will be installed around 7 p.m. on the 31st and tentatively end at 2 a.m. on the 1st. http://www.uniradioinforma.com/noticias/tijuana/articulo166278.html
