Rosarito Fiscal Crisis Closes Libraries (El Sol de Tijuana, 12/13/12)
Playas de Rosarito, BC – Libraries in the Rosarito municipality will suspend services their readers, until an economic crisis ends in the city’s government.
The Council President, Dora María Esquivel of the Social Development Commission, said she regretted that librarians would have to be laid off, since the local Government does not have sufficient financial resources to pay for these functions. It won’t be until next January 2 when the libraries might again reopen.
The city Mayor added, "There are six libraries in the city and only one will remain open. This is unfortunate, because our young people and children as well as the community in general have the right to use these places."
He explained that last Tuesday the issue was raised by the city President, Javier Robles Aguirre and he expressed his dissatisfaction with having to close these public spaces. "We have been told that we have to decrease employee payroll because there is no money for librarians," he stated.
However, he argued it is necessary to promote reading in the community, "Although these places will be closed, we shall make headway soon. Approaching the holidays, there are many children and young people who like to go there. During this season we need to consider alternatives".
He also regretted many librarians are unmarried mothers and require their wages to care for their children and said, "In this case, we are looking at the possibility of them working at the Director of Social Development".
The libraries that will be closed are those located in Plan Libertador, Lucio Blanco, Primo Tapia, Poblado Morelos and Constitution. http://www.oem.com.mx/elsoldetijuana/notas/n2806000.htm
