Baja & Border News Translations: Doctors Will Offer Services to 7,000; City “Cleans” Channel

Doctors Will Offer Services to 7,000 (Tijuana Press, 12/10/12 by Nora Leticia Garcia)

Tijuana, BC - The remodeling of the Florido Morita health center, which cost 3.3 million pesos ($257,000 US), will offer medical care, according to figures from health authorities in the State, to 7,000 people living in these colonies.

The work consisted in creating a vaccination area, a nursing area, as well as an expansion and equipment of a dental office. The bathrooms of the staff as well as users were remodeled, was reported in a statement.

The reopening event included a health fair, where anti-flu vaccines were administered and medical consultations were offered, among other services.

All health centers provide the following services for free: oral care, family planning programs, exams to detect uterine cervical cancer, prenatal care, immunizations, control of diabetes and hypertension, among several others, he recalled. http://www.tijuanapress.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=8380:ofreceran-servicios-medicos-a-7-mil-usuarios&catid=1:locales&Itemid=50

City “Cleans” Channel (Tijuana Press, 12/8/12 by Vicente Calderón)

Tijuana, BC - Municipal police, closed the West expressway from calle Benton up to the top of Colonia Los Alamos Saturday morning. This was part of an operation to "clean" the indigents from the Tijuana river channel.

Shortly before 11 o'clock, only the slow lane was available for traffic while several patrols took up positions on the edge of the channel to avoid people living in the river bed from escaping and being run over by motorists. The time the operation began was not reported, but it was for several kilometers.

According to Ministry of public security communication, they stopped the indigent because many of them had committed violations. Although they did not provide the number of detainees, it was reported all were presented before a judge.

Several columns of smoke could be seen from far away at the time of the police intervention. In the past, the city has burned all the belongings of those who sleep in makeshift tents or under plastic tarps with branches of shrubs.

The Tijuana River bed has become the site where hundreds of people repatriated from the United States find shelter and also a lot of people addicted to drugs inhabit. But also other residents of the border go there to get heroin, methamphetamine and other narcotic drugs.

The police argue that many of the homeless who live in the channel do not have jobs, and commit robberies to buy food or drugs. Several of these people were charged when they left the channel and crossed the expressway, which also has caused problems to motorists. http://www.tijuanapress.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=8375:hace-qlimpiaq-la-municipal-en-el-canal&catid=1:locales&Itemid=50
