Baja & Border News Translations: Man Demands 3 Million Pesos; Water Leakage Costs More than 300,000 Pesos per Year

Man Demands 3 Million Pesos (Peninsular Digital, 12/5/12)

La Paz, Baja California Sur - At the very moment he slipped an envelope demanding 3 million pesos ($232,000 US) under the door of a dwelling, or otherwise the recipient of the letter would suffer fatal consequences, Guillermo Ortega was arrested on Tuesday afternoon.

The 58-year old subject, realizing that his action had been seen by State preventive elements that circulated around calles Nicolás Bravo and Adolfo López Mateos, he rapidly fled but without success.

Once in the custody of PEP agents, Ortega was found with a sheet of paper on a soft drink company letterhead that in addition to the one left for recipient, he had written a threat and demanded delivery of 3 million pesos, which should be dropped off on Friday at 4 a.m. at the gates of capilla del Perpetuo Socorro.

In the letter, Guillermo Ortega also demanded that the bearer of money come alone to the designated place of delivery, where the cash was to be left in a black bag and to not warn anyone.

Once the alleged was secured, agents met with the recipient of the communiqué, who reported that in the past few days, they had already been left two other cards under their door in the same way in where he threatened death and begged for the amount of money.

Guillermo Ortega was placed at the disposal of the competent authority for investigations of this case. http://peninsulardigital.com/sucesos/exigio-3-millones-de-pesos-por-dejar-en-paz-a-su-victima/97261

Water Leakage Costs More than 300,000 Pesos per Year (Peninsular Digital, 12/5/12)

La Paz, Baja California Sur - During 2012, the Organismo Operador Municipal del Servicio de Agua Potable, Alcantarillado y Saneamiento (OOMSAPAS) of La Paz found around 2,000 water leaks on streets, sidewalks and under buildings, which means an economic loss of around 300,000 pesos, ($23,000 US) said Lorenzo Núñez Castro, operating director of the Agency.

Although he argued that it is impossible to specify exactly how much water is wasted, he said, in this Administration any leaks are repaired as quickly as possible and in not more than 24 hours.

Núñez Castro indicated the main cause of these leaks is old pipelines in the city, which mostly date from the 1960s, particularly in the oldest part of the city, the downtown area, where many leaks are reported.

Finally, he said, before 2015 they expect to invest close to 26 million pesos ($2 million US) to change a large number of pipes. http://peninsulardigital.com/bcs-2/cuestan-las-fugas-de-agua-mas-de-300-mil-pesos-mensuales/96752
