Border News Translations: Human Trafficking

TINJUANA BC (El Sol de Tijuana, Krystel Gómez Seville, 5/26/11) - Just one case at the national level has been punished for trafficking in human beings. Poor dissemination and prevention of a social problem is the reason why the "Are not Merchandise" campaign kicked off yesterday under the leadership of the municipal DIF. Its scope in Tijuana is unknown. At the launch of the campaign by the municipal DIF, under the slogan "Who Steals, Who Sells and Who Buys", although García Bustamante pointed out that one instance does not have power to combat it or punish it. However, dissemination about the existence and complaints will work because the line between violence and human trafficking is so thin; often ignorance or indifference is the same as not acting against it. "It helps to give information because many people not know that it is slavery. We ask parents to review it with their children and provide that knowledge. For example: "Oh, my daughter wants to go with her boyfriend to get a modeling career; be careful of what they do on the internet", he explained. In addition to an extensive campaign about trafficking in persons and the use of number 089 for complaints, municipal DIF will promote the installation of a computer program for analysis. It would block, in real time, websites’ obscene material or those that jeopardize the integrity of the exploited, especially minors. The President of the DIF Board lamented that there are no statistics for victims of sexual exploitation in the region due to a lack of information. In this regard, the delegate of the National Commission on Human Rights, Gabriela Navarro, said when there is a "silent" crime, you begin to talk about it, complaints rise and in time can decrease the incidence by up to 15%. This is what it we will look for in this case. "Unfortunately from statistics at the national level, only one case has been prosecuted for trafficking, because we do have the laws on paper. It has already been established but if you don't know, trafficking is another type of crime," said Lourdes Díaz Infante, Director of the FIU. The campaign "You are not merchandise" is valid for the remainder of the current Administration. Work between municipal authorities and civil agencies from other levels of Government is encouraged by dissemination, talks and workshops in the DIF with parents, school staff, students and the community.
