TIJUANA BC (El Sol de Tijuana, Laura Sánchez Law, 5/22/11) - Following recurrent complaints received last month at the Procuraduría de los Derechos Humanos (Office of Human Rights) of Baja California (PDH) against services provided at Hospital General de Tijuana, particularly in the area of gynecology, an open investigation of facility staff will take place. The Procurator of Human Rights, Heriberto García García, said it previously requested a space on the outskirts of the hospital to collect complaints, specifically outside of the area of gynecology. It was argued there have only been three complaints within this institution, which he denied. "No one can stop us from setting-up outside the general hospital. There we are going to be closer, waiting for people’s complaints. It is important that people know that we are going to be there", warned the ombudsman Baja Californiano. It was reported that the PDH is currently investigating three cases, in reference to the deaths of three infants under questionable conditions at the hospital. "What has been made very clear is that something is not being done as it should be in the health institution. Without prejudging, we will be looking at the services provided in the hospital," said García García. He noted the community is aware of PDH’s purposes, which are to provide guidance, accompaniment, and management and receipt of complaints about alleged violations of human rights.

TIJUANA BC (El Sol de Tijuana, Ana Luz Sánchez Aguirre, 5/22/11) - Preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and a long labor are some consequences an overweight woman can suffer during pregnancy. Eating for two at this stage is only a myth. The important thing is to eat better, points out the specialist of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). In this regard, Angelica Virgen Magaña, head of nursing programs and coordinator of Programas Integrados de Salud (integrated programs of health) (PrevenIMSS), referred to this period as when the diet should be balanced and nutritious containing proteins, vitamins, minerals, fats and folic acid. As well, there should be some increase in calories for the normal development of the baby. She stressed you must be especially careful with what you eat during pregnancy and not suspend any foods, unless your doctor tells you to. This is because malnutrition causes serious consequences in the development of the fetus, such as malformations, alterations, prematurity and, in some cases, abortions. Virgin Magaña, via a press release, announced that during this stage it is very important to take folic acid to prevent birth defects such as spina bifida (when the spinal cord does not close completely), anencephaly (insufficient brain development) and encephalocele (when brain tissue protrudes thru a hole in the skull). She added the vitamin is found in green leaf vegetables like spinach, watercress, as well as in enriched orange juice, grains, rice, wheat, beans, and nuts. As well, a folic acid supplement is provided by ‘Healthy before Pregnancy’ program staff and during the first three months of the pregnancy. During gestation, women must gain in total between 8.5 to 12 kilos (18.75 – 26.5 lbs). In the first trimester, 1 to 1.5 kilos (2.2 – 3.3 lbs.) should be gained; in the second trimester 1.5 kilos (3.3 lbs.) per month; and in the last trimester, 1.5 to 2 kilos (3.3 – 4.5 lbs) monthly, she cited. She said that for mothers who enter pregnancy already overweight, Social Security specialists would constantly monitor them to avoid even more increase. To do this, they would receive guidance from a nutritionist to prepare healthy menus and ensure optimal development. Finally, Virgin Magaña commented the IMSS provides comprehensive care to pregnant women. They can learn about care during pregnancy, diets to be followed, the postpartum period, the benefits of breastfeeding and feeding techniques of the newborn.

TIJUANA BC (El Sol de Tijuana, Ana Luz Sánchez Aguirre, 5/22/11) - Members of the Neuróticos Anonymous Association (people affected by various mental and emotional disorders) met today to share their experiences of recovery from a disease that affects up to 95% of the world's population. Most have marked symptoms manifested by depression and anger. The State Committee of Neuróticos Anonymous has scheduled a public information event, at 12 noon today on the 21st anniversary of its existence in Baja California. Hosted will be 20 of the 840 groups active in Mexico. In a statement, the State Committee of Neuróticos Anonymous reported that the Board of public information would be held in the association civil building, located on calle Sexta Flores Magón, near Calles Miguel F. Martínez and Niños Héroes. Rommel Garcia, the information officer, said the event would involve Neuróticos Anonymous members who have been healed and maintain partnership as testimony to what can be achieved through the program. Invitation is open to the public not only to those who suffer the disease. Families who learn how the program operates can live harmoniously with those who manifest symptoms of the condition. In addition to depression and anger, other symptoms of the disease are: jealousy, fear, nervousness and any phobia associated with emotions. In addition to the event, those interested can obtain more information by phone at the State Committee (664)688 12 58, or via e-mail: www.neuroticos-anonimos.org.mx.
