Apodaca NL (El Vigia, 5/20/11) - A prison fire in the northern Mexico State of Nuevo León killed 14 prisoners this morning, reported State authorities. The spokesperson for the State Government for Safety, Jorge Domene, told press the fire occurred overnight on Friday in the criminal psychiatric ward, which was being used as bedrooms due to facility overcrowding. He added he has not investigated the cause of the fire, while another official in his office, who asked he not be identified, said it was a television short circuit. The state run prison is located in Apodaca, a municipality on the outskirts of the State Capital of Monterrey, nearby Reynosa and Mc Allen, Texas. So far, there is no report on the identity of deceased inmates.

Ensenada BC (El Vigia, 5/20/11) - In the fraccionamiento Villas del Real 7, a subject involved in a murder was captured by agents of the State Ministerial Police (PME). He had been a fugitive from justice since August 2009. The capture of Jorge Javier Gómez Sánchez, 20, was achieved after information was collected by detectives from Tecate. They obtained knowledge that the suspect could be located in Ensenada. After two days of searching, Gómez Sánchez was located by agents at Grupo de Aprehensiones near the settlement. The fugitive had an arrest warrant from the Juzgado Primero Mixto de Tecate for the crime of homicide. The crime occurred during a celebration held in August 2009 in the town of El Testerazo in Tecate. Gómez Sánchez and two others (already detained) were ingesting alcoholic drinks. Felipe Alfredo Valdez Ruiz, alias "El Jimmy", 29, was beaten in the head. Following the injuries he received, he died. After the fact, Gómez Sánchez remained at large. Once Jorge Javier Gómez Sánchez was located and captured in Ensenada, he was handed over to Tecate ministerial officers, who in-turn proceeded to place him in the local criminal jail where he can be held at the disposal of authorities so requiring him.

Ensenada BC (El Vigia, César Córdova, 5/20/11) - An electric shock was received by an employee of the Cinépolis located at Macro Plaza del Mar, resulting in the evacuation of the theater. Also laid bare were alleged irregularities in electrical installations, as well as evacuation routes. Mario Alvarez Mejía, 27, was transferred to a hospital aboard a Red Cross ambulance. He suffered second-degree burns to his foot produced by an electric shock. The Chapultepec station firefighters disconnected the electric supply power and paramedics gave him first aid. When they observed the lights were still on, they next discovered the emergency power plant had been activated. The "tragahumo" (firefighters) asked the cinema employees and customers to leave the building. Firefighters and inspectors carried out an inspection and found missing lamps for lighting in the projection rooms, as well as inadequate evacuation routes, plus other safety recommendations.
