Tonight while I was out celebrating my Shorty Award Nomination for Radical Uterus, I introduced myself to Diane Jean. Diane is Brew Ha-Ha Comedy, and she runs the comedy night at Haritnas Mediterranean. She asked me if I had ever done stand up and I said, “I haven’t been on stage since I did the Carnival Comedy Challenge in Las Vegas.” Then the lovely young waitress brought my food.
While watching my comedy buddy bomb tonight, I was reminded of the first time I bombed. I was traveling through Albuquerque, New Mexico October 1996. I was looking for an open mike comedy spot and Russ Rivas’ club was holding an open mike.
I killed in the open mike to a packed crowd. This was my first Comedy Club experience. Until this moment all I had ever done was read my comedy writing off of my 5x7 cards to a bar full of drunk’s downtown Reno Nevada.
I left the club that night with an invitation to open for the headliner and be a part of the show the next night.
I had so much new material, and I was so eager to take a risk, it started out good but in the end I bombed to a packed house. Within days I went from euphoria to disaster and I was not emotionally strong enough to handle it, or the criticism that Russ Rivas laid at my feet.
I will share with my comedy buddy how important it is to make your first five minutes the best, most consistent, killer five minutes you can, and then do not mess with a good thing.
While Russ was a story teller, he wanted to see more story telling, and I was a fan of the set up and punch line and I still am. I also like the sneaky one liner.
I enjoyed myself immensely tonight. I brought home a couple of doggie boxes and I have already eaten my left over’s. Tonight’s beer was Hefeweisen, and it went well with tonight’s comedy selections- A Yeti, a couple of old white guys, one Columbian, an Indian and old broad. I was so grateful to see a female comic older than me. Anita, you are inspiring.
