I Am a Nation of One

“Under God with liberty and justice for all“ as I write those words, I am simultaneously remembering two distinct things the “Army of One” recruiting campaign slogan of the years 2001 to 2006, and me as a small child reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to our nation’s flag in my elementary school years 1965 through 1972.

From 2001 to 2006 an “Army of One” replaced “Be All You Can Be,” as the United States Army recruiting slogan. I joined the Army in 1977 under the recruiting slogan, “This Is the Army”.

I enlisted exactly as great change was taking place, Women’s Army Corp abolished, and first ever American Military co-ed training began. My Army aptitude tests indicated I would best serve the Army as a cook, but no, I chose electronics. I wanted to get into Broadcasting and understanding electronics was the way to go.

“This Is The Army,” really meant at the time, “test scores, whatever, it‘s an all volunteer Army.” It was a time of social engineering.

Basic training was tough on me, only because I developed shin splints and the last half of Basic Training I was on crutches. I still fired expert with the M-16.

My experience after Basic Training quickly taught me that as a low ranking female soldier I was a potential target of abuse every where I went, especially during transition between Basic and my Advance training destination. I do not mean sexual assault from just men, but from superior ranking females as well. Yes, women in authority can be sexual predators too.

That brings me to the knock on my door yesterday afternoon. It was my neighbor, a thirty something, handsome, funny, black man, with a diamond ear ring, as I open the door he proclaims,” They raided our spot.”

I responded with confusion, “Huh, what spot, how can they raid a sidewalk?”

“No, California Best Meds, the DEA right now man, and I don’t even have a joint.”

(He is clearly fishing at this point; will I have pity on him?)

I said,” that’s too bad.” then I thought,( I did not know we had a spot, and I damn sure am not gonna hook a brother up. I am keeping my distance from this young man after I found out he's paying child support on six children, or so he say.)

I closed the door and got on the internet and confirmed the information, California Best Meds raided by Federal agents. I thought about my personal records, which are now in the hands of the DEA. California Best Meds my last bastion of community cannabis access.

I am now wondering if my HIPAA patient’s rights and my Americans with Disability Act Rights, and my Veterans rights are in conflict with the right of the DEA to pursue illegal drug offenders. In addition, will that have any bearing on how long my trip to Alaska will last?

Under the National Defense Authorization Act of 2011, I can be held in detention an indefinite amount of time for conspiracy to commit sedition.

I hear FEMA has an Alaska camp for people like me. Obama recently signed the new NDAA while vacationing in Hawaii for the 2011 Holiday Season.

Nevertheless, let me back way up, January 6, 2001, George Bush and Dick Cheney seize power. Vice President Al Gore immediately establishes himself as a Global Warming whistleblower reaping millions of dollars of profit.

Sept 11 2001 Saudi Nationals seize control of commercial American aircraft and fly them into strategic civilian targets, the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a lonely Pennsylvania field.

I watched the planes that morning from my workplace in Montana, and I wondered if my American Airlines Captain, first ex-husband, was piloting one of the American flights that day, September 11, the day of our wedding anniversary.

However, I digress once again, what does my personal ancient history have to do with the price of weed in San Diego in 2012?

“An Army of One “recruiting slogan was born in 2001. I describe the 9/11 hijackers as Saudi Nationals, because they held Saudi passports and I always felt that our country was railroaded into the Iraq and Afghanistan wars by the Bush/Cheney Military Industrial Complex.

What does this have to do with the price of weed in San Diego January 2012?

I am reminded of the other half of my simultaneous thought process - the duck and cover nuclear defense drills of my childhood, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and going home listening to my Dad rant about how he was being screwed by his new boss.

My Dad was a convicted felon, a tax dodger, an identity thief; he was also a police officer a commercial deep-sea diver and an alien abductee.

While I am not a convicted felon, I am a mental health patient, and an “other than honorably discharged veteran” from the United States Army.

I am also a cannabis patient wondering how I am going to manage my pain and mental health issues without access to cannabis. Oh, I can probably find it, but my search will put me at risk for victimization. A topic I know well.

I watch a lot of television; I take note of the Attorney’s Ads and their pursuit of harmful drugs. Vicodin is now on that list. I chose cannabis, not vicodin. My liver is still working. Is the price of cannabis in San Diego in 2012 commemsurate with the price of a new liver?

I believe there is a waiting list for new livers.

So, do I sacrifice my liver for my country? Depends on how bad I want to see Alaska.
