A Day of Overrated Things

Yesterday was a day filled with overrated stuff.

The afternoon started with a debate I had with a few friends that loved Zombieland. This movie is getting great ratings from the critics everywhere. The film did absolutely nothing for me.

It has a great cameo, and it’s entertaining in parts…but it’s so poorly written. It even uses jokes that have been done in so many other films (playing Dueling Banjos as a punchline; the nerdy kid not wanting to admit he’s a Virgin, and when they drive passed a Fed Ex truck, getting the idea to say he's had sex in the back of a Fed Ex truck. And what was her name, Woody Harrelson asks? Beverly. Beverly Hills.)

Then Monday Night Football started. And I thought about how overrated the Miami Dolphins “wildcat offense” is. For those that don’t know football, a quick explanation is just that the center doesn’t snap the ball to the quarterback. Sometimes it’s to a receiver or running back, and it keeps the defense guessing. The problem is Miami, the team that runs it most, has only won one game. So why does anyone care? They could snap the ball to the coach, or a fan in the 5th row…if you aren’t winning games, why is it being talked about as such an innovative thing?

At half time, my girlfriend and I went to DeMille’s on Adams Avenue. We’ve both talked about how overrated that place is. All our friends love it. And the few times we’ve been there (together and with other people), we’ve been disappointed.

We were again last night. Oh, we did love the artichoke and spinach dip we got for an appetizer. Everything else we hated (antipasto salad, ravioli, lasange).

We came home and watched a movie we got on Netflix. Someone, possibly on the Reader website, I can’t remember…recommended “King Corn.” This stemmed from me mentioning how many great documentaries I keep seeing, with “King of Kong” being one (that was about nerds that compete for the highest video game scores). We got through about 45 minutes of this movie, being bored to tears the entire time.

So we watched a Chris Rock special on HBO. My girlfriend agrees with everyone else in the world, that Rock is one of the best comedians of all-time. I think there are easily 200 comedians better than he is. In fact, it’s one of the reasons Rock was never very funny on Saturday Night Live. He can only be funny in small doses.

After an hour of his special, I think I laughed a few times. And smiled a few more times. Not a horrible way to spend an hour, but geez…why does this guy get such credit for being a comedic genius? He takes topic ideas that have been played to death (Obama is black and so….); and he doesn’t give us great punchlines to these premises.

When I checked my computer, I see a few of my friends have now posted a video clip of a guy that I thought was Chris Rock. They say how powerful the piece is. I watch it, and see him doing a slam poetry type of reading, about his father leaving him. Every 10 seconds he's saying "Knock knock?" It was somewhat clever and well-written, but for people to be moved to tears by this.

I started annoying my girlfriend as she brushed her teeth. Using the cadance of his voice (which sounded very Martin Luther Kingish) I was screaming "Knock knock? Who's there? Madame...my damn dad is no longer here to take care of me! Knock knock? Who's there? The tooth paste cap, which you lost three days ago...

(I think she would've laughed more, if she didn't have a mouth full of tooth paste and wasn't already annoyed by our Chris Rock debate)

And of course, the night ended with one of the most overrated people on the planet – Craig Ferguson. The guy just can’t do a funny monologue to save his life.

As I laid in bed listening to the rain and trying to fall asleep, I watched an episode of Family Guy that was hysterical. It involved the family thinking they were really Jewish.

At least I was able to end the night with two things that aren’t overrated –

Family Guy and sleep!
