Taking a Stand by Refusing to Stand

With this being the last day of school for the kiddies this week, I thought a few stories about kids would be interesting. Especially since Headline News just ran one.

In New York, a 13-year-old boy with Aspergers was in the subway system for 11 days. He had $11 in his wallet and they say he “survived” on junk food, like Coke and potato chips, and food he found. His mom said when they found him, he was dirty. And a lot thinner (sounds like a commercial ad could be in the work for Coke).

The movie Shower (a Japanese film I highly recommend) had a scene with someone mentally disabled being lost for days. And you really feel for the family.

Although, the mother is claiming the police did a bad job at looking for him (even though it was a cop that found the kid on a pier in Coney Island). She’s claiming racism, among other things.

The other story involving a child is a lot more fun.

It’s a 5th grader (I forget where), who refused to stand up for the Pledge of Allegiance. At first I thought it was another case of parents that told their children to boycott because of the word “God”. And really, we should just drop “god” from the pledge. It wasn’t in it originally.

But when I saw this kid on the news, I really dug him. First, he’s well-spoken and smart (albeit a tad precocious). Second, his beef wasn’t with God. It was with gay rights. He said that if homosexuals can’t marry or adopt kids, he didn’t want to stand for the Pledge.

It’s unfortunate that the first few days he decided not to stand, it was with a substitute teacher. And when his real teacher returned and they got into it, he said “With all due respect, ma’am…you can go jump off a bridge.”

Off to the principal.

Aren’t kids this age playing Yu-Gi-Oh? But this young man is thinking about the rights of others. Gotta love that.

And here’s the best part. His dad is sitting with him, and you can so tell, he doesn’t really want any part of this. He rolled his eyes at one point. When his son talked about being called a “gaywad” in the lunch hall…the dad put his head in his hands and laughed.

The child is so smart, he skipped a grade. I just hope he doesn’t have to skip by the bathrooms, for fear that bullies are going to dunk his head in a toilet.
