I know a lot of people that ride motorcycles. I tell them they're idiots. But I don't harp on them about it. What's the point? They know the dangers.
I remember when I turned 16 and everyone my age was getting their first car. My friend Ed got a bike. Well, a car in front of him decided to make an illegal U-turn, and knocked him about 20 feet in the air. He was wearing a helmet, and only suffered a broken arm.
I'm sure everyone that knows someone with a motorcycle has similar stories.
But sometimes it pays to ride those crotch rockets.
In Monterey, a jury ordered the state to pay $8.6 million to a dude on a motorcycle who was struck by (multiple choice here):
A) A drunken driver. B) A police officer chasing a suspect. C) Roads with too many pot holes and debris. D) Six wild boars on the road.
If you guessed D), you win. And, if you crashed into those wild boars, you win even more.
The jury ruled that the state was responsible for the injuries because they "knew" that wild pigs regularly crossed a stretch of Highway 1, which creates a dangerous situation and they did nothing to address it.
I'm wondering what needed to be done -- A sign that says "Pig crossing", with the silouhette of a boar; or a photo of Miss Piggy wagging her finger at ya.
The guy now requires a wheelchair. And, he was previous a karage teacher and champion kickboxer, so maybe that all played into the jurors decision. It all sounds ridiculous to me.
But closer to home, another ridiculous situation has occured regarding the roads. And money.
When those guys were fleeing from the cops last week and threw money out the window, drivers did what a lot of people would do if they saw money flying out of a car window. They stopped and picked up the loot.
What I found the most interesting about this, is that authorities didn't start nabbing people right there; for getting out of their cars on a freeway, and creating a dangerous situation. There's actually clips I saw on the news of a police officer flying by around 85 mph, about 10 feet from a guy picking up cash on the shoulder of the road, near the left lane.
And I loved how they tried saying that some other drivers took photos of license plates and got video, and they threatened to use that to nail these people. That would never work. I mean, what if someone grabbed a thousand bucks, and you got their license plate? They could claim someone else borrowed their car. Or they could say they only grabbed 50 bucks.
Yet, the police keep issuing statements that they'll catch these people. Yeah, right.
How about the cops next time handle that situation properly. It only takes a few to follow the criminals (uh..."alleged" criminals). The other officers could've pulled over and kept idiots from getting out of their car and done crowd control, or issue tickets to those that did.
