The Oscars did something that many movie lovers are happy about. I’m not.
They are increasing the number of movies nominated from five to 10. Some academy members say this has to do with all the bad press they got when The Dark Knight wasn’t nominated for Best Picture.
But to me, a simple solution for that last year would’ve been to drop The Reader (a very disappointing film), and add The Dark Knight (a surprisingly well-made action picture).
Other people like these added mominations, because they realize that these popcorn films now have a shot. But I’m not so sure. This could just mean that a few more indie films -- that most people don’t see -- get the nods.
I read one mention of people being upset that Wall-E wasn’t nominated for Best Picture. But wasn’t it in the “animated” category? I think those films are fine in their categories.
I do have a problem with comedies not usually being recognized. Sure, if it’s a film like Tootsie, it does fine. But sometimes a crazy comedy, if well done, deserves a nomination. So far this year, I haven’t seen one that warrants a nomination (although many would argue with me on The Hangover).
Of all the comments from critics and academy members, Samuel L. Jackson had the one I agree with most. He said, “I think they should create a separate category with the five highest-grossing films or for action films and comedy films.”
Usually a movie that makes hundreds of millions at the box office, doesn’t translate to Oscars. Titanic was one of the rare exceptions. And if a movie made hundreds of millions of dollars, no matter what stuffy critics may have thought of it, audiences liked it.
