We've all seen the video by now. It happened in Texas (where else?) A great grandmother in her early 70s, was pulled over. She was cursing at the cop and telling him she wasn't going to sign the ticket. I don't think most people realize, signing the ticket isn't admitting guilt. And refusing to sign the ticket doesn't just make the cop go away. It makes your problems worse.
The woman wouldn't get out of her car when told. The officer drags her out and she starts yelling about how he's pushing an old lady around (she's also only 4'11").
I should say right now, I have no problem with this old bat getting tased. I've already said we should pass laws that nobody over 70 is driving. But I give this woman credit. At least she wasn't an old person going 53 mph in the left lane. She was actually speeding.
Bill O'Reilly said that he didn't think it was right to tase an old lady and that there should be a "gentle" way to cuff her.
I heard a talk show host I actually like, on Headline News, say there should've been a "nicer way" to arrest this lady.
What people don't realize is...someone can be 12-years-old, or 102. If they are fighting, pushing, and being combative, you probably can't cuff them without it involving some real physical confrontation.
So, had this cop tackled her and she broke her hip...well, he would be criticized for that.
If he maced her, again...she'd fall down or run into traffic.
I'm guessing there are people out there that will say the same thing they said when that old guy in Chula Vista got shot with bean bags and died. He was holding a sharp piece of glass and threatening people. And all the idiots of the world thought the cops should just stand there and talk to him. Even if that took 18 hours. Even if that cost the city however much it would cost, to have 10 officers standing around entertaining this old coot.
And a perfect example of why the police shouldn't treat an old person different...
I heard there was a shooting at a Holocaust museum in D.C. The shooter was some racist idiot. I was picturing DeNiros look in Taxi Driver. Nope. This racist was 88-years-old.
I don't even know the details of the story yet. But had the cops shown up on the scene and seen him with a gun, should they have just acted like it was some old guy that shouldn't be taken down? Maybe he's an old guy that just happened to walk upon the crime scene and pick up the weapon. Maybe we should ask him to show photos of his grandchildren, or ask him about his childhood, living through the depression. When he gets distracted doing that, we'll disarm him.
Come on, people. It's about time you realize that cops have a tough job. If you don't follow their rules, you might go down.
