The only awards show I really care for is the Oscars. And they usually end up frustrating me for a lot of reasons.
The only time I ever cared about the Tony's, was when a musician I love named Stew had his play "Passing Strange" nominated for a few things a couple years back (Spike Lee filmed it...so be on the lookout).
I don't watch much TV, so I don't usually care about the Emmy's. But I saw the nominations yesterday, and was pleasantly surprised by a few things.
First, that Flight of the Conchords, a show that HBO talks about cancelling, was nominated for Best Comedy. One of the guys in the band (Jemaine Clement), got nominated for "best actor in a comedy series."
I'm not sure how they picked him over the other guy, Bret. I can see the two of them, both playing the straight man, having a conversation like "Why did you get nominated and not me?"
"I don't know. Maybe they like my glasses."
"Well, I could've gotten a pair of glasses. And besides, I wear these cool animal shirts."
I'm just glad to see one of them got the nomination.
I like the fact that Jay Leno didn't get a nomination, although I was bummed Conan O'Brien didn't get one. He always does great shows.
30 Rock got 22 nominations. Unbelievable. I watched the show last night. It was only the 4th or 5th episode I've ever seen. And boy, that show just isn't funny. You smile at a joke maybe once or twice during the entire episode.
Yes, Tina Fey is great playing that character. Alec Baldwin, too. And Tracy Morgan was perfectly cast, and he's always hilarious on the late night talk shows (as he was on Saturday Night Live). He just isn't very funny on 30 Rock.
I thought 3rd Rock From the Sun was funnier than 30 Rock!
It's great that Family Guy got a much deserved nomination. That show rarely disappoints.
Although, I heard someone on the radio say that The Simpson's has never won an Emmy. I found that hard to believe.
Sarah Silverman received a nomination, which is good news. I've only caught 7 or 8 episodes of that show, but it always has me in stitches.
Toni Collette (the mom in 6th Sense) is a great actress, and she probably deserved the nod for playing a woman with multiple-personalities in "United States of Tara." But the three episodes I've seen of it were uninteresting.
It's so bizarre to think that the Emmy's have a "reality show" category. I'm just glad Jon and Kate didn't make it into that (although, that category includes shows like American Idol and Dancing With the Stars, so most of those cheesy, Bret Michaels, Flavor Flav, Jon and Kate crap, won't get the nods).
What's even more bizarre, though, is that there's actually a category called "Best Reality Show Host."
Really? Is this category even necessary?
The vanilla personalities of Ryan Seacrest, up against Tom Bergeron. The suspense of who will win is just killing me.
