Here's something you might be interested in.
I saw The Wrestler the other night. It was good, but not as great as the critics say it is. And Maresa Tomei is badly miscast. Don't get me wrong, seeing her naked I'm fine with (although it was a bit exploitative in this).
I won't go into all the details of the film. I'll save that for Duncan. But, there was one poorly written scene where the two main characters long for the days of 80s hair-band rock. As they talk about the various bands, San Diegos Ratt is blasting out of the jukebox, singing "Round and Round". Maybe Jay A Sanford will write something in his blogs about them. I know I saw one of his Neighbors comics about the Ratt singer.
My favorite band of the 80s was Queen. My older brother would say "That singer is a homo, ya know." I would deny that he was, although, being in 5th grade when I had their first 4 albums, I'm not even sure what that meant. He made a point of opening the debut album up, to show me the picture of Freddie Mercury being fed grapes by a muscle man. So I figured he had a point. I didn't care. The songs were great (aside from that first album, which was a bit weak).
Anyway, I just bought the latest Queen CD. And, I've only gotten up to track 10, but it's awful. It really isn't a Queen record, as it only has two of the original guys (one being the talented guitarist Brian May). I've heard one song I loved, and one song that was okay. The rest is crap. Hopefully the last few tracks are good.
It's funny, because Paul Rodgers is now their singer. He sounds nothing like Mercury, which was probably a smart move. Had they brought in someone that did, like George Michaels, that lends itself to being compared to a tribute band.
Rodgers had great stuff with Free and Bad Company. He teamed up with guitarist Jimmy Page nicely in The Firm. And, his album of all blues covers is sweet.
So, I'm hoping their next disc is better.
But I won't be buying it unhead like this one. Maybe by then I'll by downloading, like everyone else.
