Bungling Bicycle Burglars

Burglary stories are always fun to blog about. Probably more fun to watch on those shows that catch the crooks on camera.

In Bellevue last week, a man made sure a couple burglars in his house didn't get away. No...he didn't pull out a gun and blow them away (Bellevue is in Washington, not Texas).

The 32-year-old was in his basement when he heard the thieves upstairs. He called 911 and snuck out of the house. He saw a van sitting out front with the motor running. He jumped inside and drove off with it (one a side note: the way the legal system is in our country, I can see the burglars suing him for stealing their van).

As this laid-off bank manager approached his friends house in his new van, the burglars left the TVs, jewelry, and laptop by the door and ran.

Another weird theft that I found interesting, was Lance Armstrongs $10,000 bike that disappeared for four days. He's participating in the 4th annual Tour of California, and is in 4th place.

Two other bikes that were stolen from the same truck as Armstrongs, haven't been found yet.

I'm curious about so many aspects of this story. Do cyclists lock their bikes the way we did as kids? Do they pull a tire off, the way some riders do? And, what the hell is in a bicycle that makes it worth 10 grand? You can buy vehicles with engines for that price.

And that got me thinking about how much they do to their bicycles. And when I saw two tourists zipping around Balboa Park today on Seques, I wondered if those dudes from Jack Ass have rigged one yet. They can get it go 50 mph, and see how long they can stay on it.

I guess the safe thing would be for me to tell you not to try that at home. But the curious part of me wants you to. And report back on the results.

And, for anyone wanting to catch Armstrong riding thru town, I think that happens later this afternoon in the North County. I'm sure you can Google for details.
