A few stories from the Associated Press caught my eye.
One involves a woman killing her roommate. Nothing so unusual about that. I mean, someone eats your Swanson TV dinner, it’s on.
This dispute apparently had to do with the amount of visitors one roommate had. Again, you can see that escalating. At what point does a roommates boyfriend, who starts staying over all the time, become not just a houseguest but a roommate himself? And will they pony up more rent? Do they realize utility bills go up, etc.
What makes this case interesting is the woman was 98-years-old. And she killed her 100-year-old roommate.
With ages like that, you think the argument would be from one leaving their teeth out on the coffee table or something.
The other story I found interesting because, one of my upcoming Off the Cuff questions has to do with smuggling.
A woman coming into New York City was caught smuggling monkey meat through Customs.
Mamie Manneh was caught with dozens of primate parts hidden in a batch of smoked fish (sounds like a yummy hash in the making).
The boxes had limbs, skulls, and torsos of monkeys and baboons. She was charged with smuggling endangered species.
And why was she smuggling them? Well, she claims to have needed the meat for religious reasons.
That made me think of a story I read a few weeks ago about albinos in some country that feared for their life, because people often murdered them for various limbs, thinking they brought good luck. They sure don’t bring good luck to the people that have them.
A judge gave the monkey lady, who has 11 children that I’m sure are going to be wonderful members of society, a light sentence because he deemed her mentally ill.
