A Sunday Picnic -- Free From the Computer

I met this cute woman from Haiti last night. We were having this great conversation, and something about an actor came up and she said "Whip out your iphone."

My girlfriend had to explain to her how horrible I was at anything related to technology.

When I lost my cell phone eight months ago, I bought some phone for around $20. No camera, no nothing. And it works perfect.

A friend I play racquetball with is always quick to jump on the latest technology has to offer. I remember how proud he was of his beeper (before cell phones quickly took over). I used to say "Unless you're a doctor on call, you don't need a beeper."

I went to a picnic today at Lake Poway. What a beautiful day it was. Kids were playing a variety of games. The adults were eating and chillin' in the shade.

And a large portion of the crowd had something in their hands they were either texting with, or...I don't know, using a mini computer.

I talked with one guy about how crazy it all was. He mentioned something about having his old albums, and I said how reluctant I was to buy CDs in 1990, because I had thousands of albums. I had seen 8-track tapes disappear, and then cassettes. I hate when technology makes me spend more for my music.

I looked around the grass area and wondered...are we this addicted to these items that we can't fly a kite with our kid, or just enjoy what nature has to offer?

And don't get me wrong. I'm not like one of those old guys that just complains about video games and how these things are ruining the country. I don't mind someone getting a cell phone call while we're in the middle of a conversation.

I just don't understand the need for this computer access every second.

A number of my friends hate when they see texting at the theatre, as it distracts them. It doesn't bother me to see that bit of blue light out of the corner of my eye. I just wonder why they'd want to do that and miss a scene in the movie (although, the movie was Thirsty, and it was so long and disappointing, at times I was wishing I had my laptop with me).

I have a friend that asked me two days ago why I wasn't on Twitter.

Anyone that is on Twitter is a complete idiot. Nobody cares about what you're doing thru out the day.

I would give famous people a pass, as they have projects to promote and an ego to feed.

But for anybody else out there that does Tweets, you're a loser and need to really consider getting a life (said in my best William Shatner voice)

Now what can they do with Encinitas unstable cliffs?

Make the cliffs fall, put up more warnings, fine beachgoers?
