It's funny. When Eli Manning was coming out of college and the Chargers were talking about drafting him...he said that he wouldn't play for them. They had a reputation as low-balling players when it came to salaries. And, you can sort of understand a player not wanting to be involved with all that. The Chargers did have a lot of negative attached to them.
Well, a lot of San Diego fans hated Eli for doing this. Especially since the draft is designed a certain way so that the bad teams get to draft the better players out of college. Not so college players dictate where they want to play. Otherwise, it would be the same two teams in the Super Bowl each year, and the league would crumble.
Anyway...the decision worked for Eli. He won a Super Bowl with the Giants. And that after they lost their Hall of Fame running back Tiki Barber to retirement.
The other day Manning became the highest paid player in the NFL. What's baffling about that is his brother Peyton is so much better. In fact, there are at least 10 quarterbacks in the NFL that are better than Eli Manning. And if you want to talk about all the other various positions on an NFL squad, there's at least 100 players in the NFL better than Manning. Yet he's now the highest paid. Incredible.
Paula Abdul is an interesting case. Some people out there think she isn't leaving American Idol, and that she's just talking like this for the publicity. I think she's gone.
Her contract would've paid her $10 million a year. She wanted $20. They said no. I believe she then said, "Okay, I'll take $12 million." They still said no, and she bailed.
Not a good move.
Craig Kilborne, one of the best late night hosts ever, left after the network wouldn't up his million dollar a year salary. I guess since he had a bit part in the movie Old School, he thought he could parlay that into an acting career. I haven't seen him in a movie since.
Andy Richter was making $750,000 a year with Conan O'Brien when he decided to leave and do movies. And he always got bit parts in films, or was given sitcoms that were critically praised but cancelled soon after they started. And now he's back with Conan.
Didn't anyone learn from those guys that left MASH?
What's funny about Paula Abdul is this. She often seemed out of it. Whether that was doing interviews with the media about American Idol, or talking to contestants on her own show (once even talking about a performers songs, that hadn't been performed).
She used to be a dancer (remember the Laker girls?). She used to have hit songs (remember the goofy cat video?). But I doubt that's something she can successfully go back to.
She did sell products on QVC.
I'm guessing that's where her future lies.
