Pirates

I don't usually like to blog about the big news stories. I initially figured that was Bauder territory. Then I saw that he had a bunch of blogs in a row about the Union-Tribune, so I'm not sure what topics he takes on anymore.

But I just think it's more fun to vent about the legal system, or talk about a great film I've seen. If I type the word "pirates" in a blog, I'd rather it be about a Johnny Depp movie or a Gilbert & Sullivan piece.

Then every channel had something on that captain being freed from the pirates.

A few days earlier, he had escaped and tried to swim away. But, machine gun fire near his head ended that quickly.

What got me about this story was that a few months back when pirates attacked off the coast of Somalia, I wondered why nothing was being done about it.

I've heard a few newscasters talk about boats having more security. There was one boat that shot water canons at pirates, and they kept them from boarding.

I was at Souplantation for lunch the other day (because that's how I roll), and a woman was going on and on about how people on these small boats could board a boat so big without them being ran over by the huge liners.

I don't think people realize that if you have a huge boat, you can't just manuever quickly. And small boats that have hardcore weapons, make it easy for them to get what they want.

I started thinking about all the ways to negotiate. Maybe giving them a suitcase with counterfit or marked bills. Then I heard that their demands are money in off-shore accounts. Man, pirates have gone a long way since the days of stealing sunken treasure with swords.

Someone said the Navy doesn't have enough ships to add adequate protection.

I'm not sure what the answer is. But I'm guessing it's something that liberals and the ACLU won't like. Perhaps having armed security that blows anything out of the water that gets within a certain range of a big ship. And if that means an occasional fishing boat that doesn't have a radio, oh well.

The only thing I know for sure is this. If it happens again, I won't have any sympathy for the boats occupants. At this point, they know better and should be prepared.
