So, a 20-year-old guy killed himself in Oceanside. And what happens? The parents go and do all this media, about how the police suicide negotiator, didn't do his job properly. Come on!
Enough with all this crap.
First, lots and lots of negotiators and pychiatrists listened to the transcript. They said the officer did a great job. They said the reason the cop started saying things like "Don't be a coward! Man up, and put the gun down and let's talk about this." (that's not an exact quote, but their big complaint is that the officer/negotiator was "rude" and "said mean things"). What the other negotiators said that listened to this and/or read transcripts, was this is one of the tactics they teach. And this officer employed it after everything else was failing.
Now, I feel bad for the parents, losing their son. But when they start mouthing off about the cops doing a bad job, well, I lose all my sympathy.
I would like someone to point out, that they had a loser for a kid. And, this loser kid shot himself. And we now have one less loser in the world.
Let's look at the facts. Of the ones I know (which are very little on this case), this guy did some jail time because his girlfriend broke up with him and he showed up at her work, after an "altercation" at her workplace.
To me, anyone that can't handle a relationship ending, needs to check themself into a facility. Not show up at the persons work, or home, and have cops called and restraining orders filed.
Second...the parents left the house, and this guy retrieved his father's gun from a locked cabinet. He then drove to Wal-Mart (for all your bullet needs), and bought .22-caliber cartridges. He then sent his ex-girlfriend a cell phone photo of the gun.
Now, is he doing this to scare her? Is he doing it to illicit sympathy? Whatever the reason, that is one pathetic move. If the kid was 14, I might be sympathetic. But some loser that needs to taunt an ex-girlfriend, well, I'm glad he's off the planet. This is the type of guy that would shoot a co-worker he gets mad at, or be involved in a roadrage incident.
Now, if the parents want to keep going on about the police negotiator not doing their job, I'd like to tell them...they didn't do THEIR job. They didn't raise a young man, to be an outstanding member of society.
Because, maybe if they did their jobs right, a 20-year-old would be able to deal with situations a little better than blowing his brains out.
And, I'll take it a step further. Before you blame cops, blame yourselves. You had a gun in the house. You had a gun that HE USED to kill himself.
I've always said, I have no problem with people owning guns. None at all. You should have that right. Bare arms, shoot bears, do whatever the hell you want. But once someone dies, from your gun, I think you should be held accountable.
Therefore, I think one of the parents should be doing jail time. A person died, at the hand of THEIR gun, which was left in a place that an unstable individual got to.
Had they been better parents, they certainly would've known this guy was going thru hard times. That, to me, sounds like a time you get the gun out of the house.
I met a guy at a Thanksgiving in July party, that told me a long story he was reading at his college in New York, all about suicide. He mentioned a study that showed that just putting a large fence at a bridge, or making the railing high enough that you can't climb onto, drops the suicide rate significantly. He said that so many suicidal people, do it because of the convenience and last minute decision, to just jump off the bridge. If they can't climb up there, many of them don't stop to think...Hmmm, what's another way I can do this?
So, had the gun not been in the house, there's a chance this kid would still be alive.
When cops do something wrong, I'll be the first onboard to bash them. But when people try to knock them for doing their jobs, dangerous jobs, low paying jobs, etc...to me, that's a lot worse.
