I've always found it odd when certain people get credit for being funny.
Everyone is praising Sarah Palin for "showing up" on Saturday Night Live.
I walked in the door at 11:30, and remembered to turn it on (I'm one of the few people without Tivo, and I don't care enough to set up the VCR).
I missed the first few lines, but saw Alec Baldwin mention how attractive she was, after implying that he thought it was Tina Fey. She had a great line about him being her "second favorite Baldwin brother."
She went out to the podium while Tina Fey was doing the impression, and Fey ran away. Palin then said she wouldn't be taking any questions (of course), before yelling the catch phrase of "Live from New York...it's Saturday Night!"
During the news segment later in the show (the only thing that's been consistantly funny on SNL for the last few years), Palin showed up again. She said she didn't want to do the skit they rehearsed (which, you already know is part of the bit). Amy Poehlin, who is pregnant, volunteers to do it.
It's a rap song. And, it's surprisingly clever and funny (there were lines about seeing Russia from her backyard, and shooting a moose, which came out onto the set before being shot gangsta style).
Palin sat in the background throwing her hands in the air (side note: have you ever noticed how many hip-hop songs tell you to "throw your hands in the air/like you just don't care"?)
So overall, her appearance was funny. And, would've been funnier if it didn't leak that she'd be on the show (with previous cameos like that...they have kept it under wraps).
It's just weird that everyone comes out saying how funny Palin was, and blah blah blah.
Now, I'll give her credit if I find out that SHE wrote that rap song. Or, that it was her idea to say "your my second favorite Baldwin." But seriously...this show has a team of writers.
And yeah, we understand it's hard to do the show. Just look at how badly Michael Phelps flopped when he did it.
But to come out and say a few lines to Baldwin...I don't think that gives you credit as some comic genius. Or, even credit at all.
Not to mention the fact that you have enough people asking why Palin isn't doing the hard-hitting interview shows. Instead, she picks the easy things.
Maybe to show that she's just an average Joe the plumber.
Or a regular hockey mom.
Someone you can sit down and have a beer with. While bitching about how Saturday Night Live isn't nearly as funny as it was with the original cast.
