I don't follow the NBA like I did as a teenager. I can't name every starting guard on every team. I just know the all-stars, and enjoy watching highlights on ESPN.
I heard that the Golden State Warriors suspended Monta Ellis (hey...he should go on my blog of goofy names). He's going to miss 30 games without pay, all because he got into a moped accident.
Now, what happened with cool accidents, like motorcycles? Remember, former Scripps Ranch stand-out, and now Cleveland Brown, Kellen Winslow Jr. missed an entire season on a motorcycle?
What kind of ribbing is he going to take from his homies?
Well, that little bike is going to cost him about $3 million, since he recently signed a contract that pays him $66 million for 6 years.
This all reminded me of when Dennis Rodman was playing for, I think it was the Spurs. He was in a motorcycle accident, and broke his leg.
It was the only time I called in to Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton's show. I asked if the team would have to pay him, since his injury didn't occur on the basketball court. He told me they didn't have to, but would, so that they could stay on good terms with him.
And, that really surprised me. This is all big business.
I remember visiting a friend in Salt Lake City, and reading in the newspaper there, how Karl Malone was mad that all the Jazz players (side note: when you think of jazz music, is Salt Lake City the place that comes to mind?)...they have to sign contracts that forbid them from skiing.
The way a lot of these athletes make decisions...contracts are going to start being a few hundred pages long.
