The Waiting is the Hardest Part

I remember about 8 years ago, being at a dentist in Sorrento Valley. I had an appointment for 4:00 p.m. It was just a teeth cleaning and exam. They didn't get me in until about 4:45. Then I sat there for another 35 minutes. They checked my teeth really quick, and said the cleaning would be starting soon.

When it got to be close to 6:00 p.m. I called my racquetball partner. We usually met up at the other end of Mira Mesa, around 6:15. I told him on my cell phone, "Yeah, I'm going to be late. I'm not sure, but these idiots in the dentists office, just have me sitting here. I don't know what's going on."

At that point, they seemed to speed things up. And hey...maybe it's not the smartest thing in the world to talk smack right before they're going to go into your mouth with sharp instruments. But I was pissed.

For some reason, dentists seem to do this. Well, doctors in general.

I have a new dentist now. And usually, I don't have to wait. But I bring the newspaper just in case.

So yesterday, I was 20 minutes early. I read their Sports Illustrated in the lobby. I was called back on time.

X-rays were taken right away. And then, I sat there for 30 minutes. Which is exactly why I brought the newspaper. I finished two sections before I saw anyone.

I don't know if they think just because they "started" the process, it doesn't matter if I sit there.

Once I saw someone, it was brief, and then I waited another 10 minutes. I swear, if I didn't have the newspaper, or if I had another appointment, I would've been livid.

How hard is it for them to book their patients, and see to them, at that time?

If you went to a restaurant, you wouldn't tolerate standing in the lobby for a long time, when you have a reservation. Or, if they sat you at a table....what if you didn't see a waiter/waitress for 30 minutes?

And, if you ran a business, imagine treating a client this way.

When I'm on hold on the telephone, I don't get as mad. Because, I really don't know what's going on. But when you are sitting in the dentists chair, and you hear two female employees up front, gossiping. And, you only hear one other patient being worked on, you start to wonder why it's taking so long.

The dentist always ends up lecturing you on what you can do to your teeth. Since I floss, I never hear that line. But, they'll say "You have more plaque built up behind your teeth then you should. Make sure you really concentrate on those areas when you brush."

I wanted so bad to say, "Will do. Oh, and an area you can work on. When people have appointments, try to get them in and get the work done, so we don't sit here all morning in your chair, staring up at lame posters on the ceiling with some cute animal and goofy message."

Now what can they do with Encinitas unstable cliffs?

Make the cliffs fall, put up more warnings, fine beachgoers?
