Jim Morrisons dad died the other day.
Being a huge Doors fan, I remember when a friend of a friend was going to be doing their cabinets at the home they owned in Coronado.
He told me when he went down to take measurements, they had one room that was a shrine to Jim. Which was interesting to hear, since the parents were never that thrilled by Jim.
When he graduated from UCLA (the movie shows him dropping out, but in fact, all the Doors had degrees from UCLA), Rear Admiral George "Steve" Morrison, said in a letter, that he didn't think forming a rock band was the most productive thing. Jim never talked to his folks again.
The obituary in the Union-Tribune yesterday, talked about him going to other admirals houses, and their kids having posters of Jim on their bedroom wall.
He never did interviews talking about Jim. The first time he did, was a coffee table book the band released last year.
In one of the earlier Doors books, Jim's brother Andy talks about his parents hearing the first Doors album when it came out (with the songs Break on Thru, Light My Fire, Back Door Man, Soul Kitchen, etc). When the album ends with, the approrpriately titled The End, Jim has a line where he sings "Father?/Yes Son?/I want to kill you!"
At the pool at Humphrey's a few years back after a concert, I met a woman who used to date Andy Morrison. She told me he had a surf shop in Coronado. And he loved telling everyone he was Jim's brother.
She mentioned him partying a lot. A story I heard from others.
Jim's sister Anne married, and eventually put on a play, that cast a Jim Morrison look alike that would later front the tribute band Wild Child (I think they play 'Canes in a few weeks, and are a lot of fun).
Jim's dad had an interesting military career. He flew in a few wars (World War II, Korea). He was at Pearl Harbor during the attacks.
And, one of his staff members moved to Poway, and they stayed close. This guy had a son that was inspired to attend the Naval Academy because of him (maybe the only person around more influenced by Jim Morrisons dad than Jim, who is often considered one of the most influential guys in rock).
According to the Union-Tribune, the son looked forward to coming home and telling his mentor that he was selected to be a naval aviator after his graduation next spring. Instead, he was flying back for the memorial service at Fort Rosecrans.
