A woman was in the newspaper a few weeks back. She said she was going to hire people to sit, in three hour shifts, on the benches in La Jolla. Her reason? To keep the homeless off of them.
I then found out this is the same woman that got things put in the middle of the benches, that keep people (ie homeless) from sleeping on them.
This woman really needs to find a hobby.
And, don't get me wrong. A lot about the homeless bother me. I once had a homeless guy ask me for money when I was leaving the Corvette Diner on a date. Now, my brother, who is a bit of a nutjob, has told them, "Go get a job, you loser!" To me, he sounds like the loser when he says that.
I simply say, "I'm sorry," and walk away. This guy, while sitting against a wall, then threw a bottle at me!!!
I thought about going back and kicking the crap out of him.
Then, as we walked further (with my date telling me to call the cops), I thought instead of going into a bank, and getting $3 worth of pennies. Then, I'd walk around the corner. He'd ask me for money, and I'd throw the pennies into his face. Hard.
But, what kept me from doing that, is the fact that many of these guys aren't mentally stable.
A lot of people that complain about the homeless, have the wrong idea about them.
Of course, it doesn't make me any less angry when someone in a car stops to give them money, blocking traffic.
I've heard stories about people walking out of restaurants, and giving their left over food they had in doggie bags, to the homeless. Only to have them rant and yell, throwing the food down or just flat out refusing it.
And, I can't say, if this woman offered to pay me to sit on a bench in La Jolla for a couple hours, I wouldn't take her up on it. Make a few dollars, and read a good book. In La Jolla!
I just wish people like this woman, would spend this time and energy into possibly helping the homeless, instead of her just worrying about her precious little town, and what it looks like to see a bum walking around.
And, the same goes for the people handing them money. We're always told, that it's better to give it to an organization that distributes it all properly, and makes sure they aren't buying drugs and alcohol with it.
