I'm tired of the hipsters that think they're too cool for school, knocking 'Canes Bar & Grill in Mission Beach.
When I overhear these losers in the smoking section of the Casbah, they'll talk about some great band coming to 'Canes, and I might hear one of them say they don't like the venue. They never have a reason why. I just think they feel it's not "hip enough"...whatever that means.
Well, they'll miss The Breeders. That's a shame.
I saw underground rapper Brother Ali, with Abstract Rude last night. A few of my friends dig them. I'm not much into rap.
But the show was great. It was a packed house, but you didn't feel like a sardine, and it's nice and ventilated.
And, you had security that didn't act like jerks. Bartenders with no attitude, and very friendly (even giving our designated driver a free Coke).
There was one drunk guy, that was immediately escorted out when he started to get disruptive.
There were two drunk girls grinding on each other. That, thankfully, weren't escorted out.
My only complaint with the joint, is they stop serving dinner at 8:30. And, I'm addicted to their fajitas. So...I get there at 8:00, which is waaaay to early (Brother Ali, after opening acts, didn't hit the stage till 11:15!)
I had a lively debate with two of my friends, regarding one of Ali's more popular songs. It's pretty negative about America, although it's cleverly written. And, coming from a Caucasian albino, it's an interesting take. But, I don't care for songs that put down the country, and in a way, I don't feel is fair. After all...this dude is getting rich, in this country. And, being able to write negative things while doing it! That's a good deal, if ya ask me. For songs that knock America, I'll take Steppenwolf's "Monster".
Ali also spends too much time talking about rappers that sell-out. But, I'm guessing Brother Ali would take a million bucks to do a commercial, or do a song that would get some mainstream radio play.
He had a great song making fun of the way he looks, joking about his bald head, overweight body, and red eyes.
He looks like a paler version of the crazy dude from Full Metal Jacket.
But, if you get a chance to see him, don't miss it. He's amazing.
And, if you get a chance to go to a show at 'Canes, you should.
You can have dinner upstairs, watching the waves on the beach and the sunset...and then catch the band playing afterwards. It's a nice night out.
