Since I'm not gay, it was an easy choice, really. I'd be watching the NBA Finals on Sunday night. Not the Tony Awards.
But, a monkey wrench was thrown into the mix. A friend of mine, an amazing musician, singer/songwriter from L.A. named Stew, has a play on Broadway.
I flew out there and saw it recently, and I wanted to watch and see if he'd win for "best musical."
But the Lakers, the team I've liked since I was in 5th grade, was in the Finals for the first time in something like eight years.
I was able to watch the first half. And, they had a 20 point lead.
Switch over to the Tony's. Whoopi was a funny host, making fun of Phantom of the Opera and other things.
I realized how little I knew about the theatre. When South Pacific won an award for something like "best revival of a musical", Glenn Close started to sing "Some Enchanted Evening." I had no clue that's where that song came from.
Early on, Passing Strange was up for "best actress" and didn't win. During a commericial, I went back to the Lakers. I couldn't believe it. They gave up a 20 point lead. It was now only three points.
I watched the other night as they had a 24 point lead, and ended up losing by seven.
I went back to the Tony's, just in time to see a segment where they showed a bunch of minor awards they gave earlier in the evening. I'm glad I did. I saw Stew up there, winning for "best book". He joked about M&Ms in his pocket. It was great.
I got to see Adam Durawitz, the Counting Crows singer who has long been a fan of Stews, give a great intro (and almost start crying) before Stew and his partner Heidi came out and did a song from Passing Strange.
The Lakers were on the free throw line with a four point lead, and 5.8 seconds left in the game. I stayed on the Tony's.
The nominees for Best Musical came up. When they showed those little squares on the screen, and it showed Stew's big face...I couldn't stop laughing. He had put on a funny nose and glasses, that also had huge fake eyebrows and a handlebar mustache. I wonder how the stuffy theatre crowd took that.
I figured "In the Heights" would win. It was getting all this buzz. It is some Puerto Rican hip-hop thing that everyones excited about.
It won. As did the Lakers.
I would've preferred the opposite. Stew and Passing Strange to win, and the Celtics to have upset the Lakers and win the series.
